NCAA Football 2004 week #8

Took a break in writing the update last weekend as I was busy and didn't get to watch any football. Last weekend, I was in front of the TV again.

Nebraska lost to Kansas State as expected. Thankfully, it wasn't a complete blowout. The next game is against Missouri. Last year, the Huskers lost against them. I don't have my hopes too high. They are definitely going to lose against Oklahoma in coming weeks. I would be very happy if they win all the other games, but, Missouri and Colorado seem to be tough opponents to this weak Husker team.

Texas made it past Texas Tech. Last year, TT scuttled the Longhorns' hope of getting into a BCS bowl. This year Texas is poised to be in the top 6 BCS rankings at the end. Hope they win against Texas A&M at the end of the season. They play Colorado next week. It should be a one-sided game with Texas winning with a huge margin.

There were no big upsets this weekend. Most of the ranked teams won their respective games. Michigan(#13) beat Purdue(#12) by 2 points. #20 Florida lost to Mississippi State. That was a shocker. Florida hasn't been the same since the departure of Steve Spurrier. Not that I liked him very much, but, he was doing a good job at Florida. Now, after getting fired as the headcoach of Redskins, don't know if he'll coach again. Also, Notre Dame (#24) lost to Boston College. Yipee! Another losing season and they will fire Ty Willingham. Hopefully, he will go to a better school. He is totally wasted at ND.

Watched Miami playing NCstate on ESPN. The NCstate kickoff was returned by Devin Hester for 100 yards and scored a touchdown on the first play of the game. That was fun to watch.

USC shutout Washington 38-0. It is time for Rick Neuheisel to get his ass fired.

Iowa beat Penn State 6-4. Pathetic!!! Penn State scored only on two safeties. That is just ridiculous. The final score of the first game in the baseball world series was higher than that.

Last year, Texas won against TT 43-40. A close game though and it was played in Austin. However, a year before that Texas lost against TT at Lubbock, 38-42 (I guess that was the score). It was Kansas State last year that destroyed the BCS hopes for LOnghorns last year. They won Big 12 Championship game against OU and hence went as Big 12 rep for the BCS game, while OU was an at-large bid due to its position in BCS rankings. Since they allow only upto 2 teams per conference, Texas could not be invited as at large bid. A year before that, it was TT that scuttled the BCS hopes for Texas Longhorns.

Kieth Gilbertson is Washington Huskies coach. Rick was fired last year for gambling in NCAA Basketball brackets.

As of now, Ron Zook is fired from Florida after end of this season. Even if he wins against Georgia (I hope FL wins since that pushes TX up in BCS), he is still fired! He will be paid 450,000 for all the remaining years of his contract!

parag: they already fired ron zook today - guess the miss state debacle was the last nail in his coffin. here are espn's possible candidates

reggie mcneal is going to bring down texas - coach fran will have the last laugh .... and ofcourse that means n o BCS bowl. once again, an excessively overrated team - those texas longhorns. IMO, they are just as painful as notre dame.

a small correction - they already fired neuheisel after the march madness pool incident last year. the coach is now keith gilbertson.

I do think that Texas is overrated; however, in the storied history of Texas-TXA&M rivalry, only VERY few times, TAMU has beaten TX at home. In fact, in last four years, only Arkansas last year beat TX at home. I am confident that TX will beat TAMU because they both are good teams and moreover, it is a home game for TX - it is an unbelievable atmosphere !!!

Hook'em horns!

Mayur, Aditya: Thanks for the corrections. I am glad that Ron Zook got fired. The comment about TT beating Horns last year is from V, a Texas alumnus. Rick Neuheisel is her favorite coach (because of looks, what else?) irrespective of team, so, I am surprised she missed the news of him getting fired.

Makes me wonder what we were doing during last year's football season... taking care of a 7 month old daughter, that's all ;)

thanks for entertaining my request :) I couldn't watch the games either and had no patience to sift thru reams of info on the websites...your weekly update gives me everything in a nutshell.

I do not think you missed much in college football last year, especially if you were taking care of your 7 month old daughter. Texas losts its bowl game and Nebraska - do you even want to talk about Nebraska football of last year? :)

Texas finally made it to the Rose Bowl!!!
Unfortunately i'm going to be in india during new years. Do you guys know if ESPN india telecasts the BCS games ... or if it is possible to watch it some place else?
Texas vs Michigan shud be one hell of a game to watch.
