Reservations & quotas

When I read the news about 50% reserved seats for muslims at Aligarh Muslim University, I wasn't surprised considering who is in power and their vote-bank pandering habits. It is surprising that this hadn't happened earlier than this.

Look who criticised this reservation... A pleasant surprise. Can't imagine I agree on something with CPI(M).

A usual suspect supporting the reservation. Her quote on this matter is really funny.

"This step will ultimately benefit 2000 deserving students," Azmi said.

"It is unfortunate that it has been given a communal colour. It should not have had any political ramification," she told reporters here.

Hah! Could the truth be any further away from her stupid utterings???

A good actor doesn't make a good politician, and an awful actress doesn't make one, either.

I wonder why anyone hasn't posted any comments on this but they find time to comment on your healthcard!
Anyways, the decision should not rattle many people though, there are many religious/community minority institutions in India, what the heck they are all over the world, so why the huge fuss ? And if our Muslim brethren can benefit from this then isn't it a good news ? I personally dislike any kind of undeserving reservations, but this one I believe doesn't fall in that category, also the article linked above clearly states that AMU is a religious minority institution and as such I guess there's nothing inappropriate about the reservation.
And about extracting political mileage out of this, well our politicians are masters at doing that with any issue.

P.S : Why the hell do I have to enter my email ID ?

kedar - i dont think its 'necessary' to enter your email id, its not shown on the blog anyway, and i believe its intended primarily for parag to communicate with you directly if needed (notifications about comments etc.)

about AMU - i was surprised they didnt have reservations already. there are so many 'minority institutions' already - sabusiddique and thadomal shahani in mumbai for example.

parag: your flickr badge on the side is looking cool ... is there a reason why it shows up on the main page, but not on individual post pages?

Aditya: Thanks for answering to Kedar. I saw the flickr badge on your blog first. That is when I decided to get it. Right now, I have put it only on the index page. I can add it to the individual posts too. Maybe later.

About AMU: If this institution receives any money from the government, then they have no right to add any more quotas on top of what the government mandates (which is ridiculously high anyway). If they don't take any taxpayer money, then they can do whatever the hell they wish. But, just by the fact that this reservation was approved and announced by the government, there has to be some govt. control and hence, govt. money involved with it.

Aditya - Thanks for clarifying, I am new here and I am sorry for my choice of words; I am just not comfortable giving away my mail id.

Parag - Yeah, you are right about which institutions can provide reservations for minorities and which cant, but the Government has got around this by framing a law !!

Cheers
