Brokeback mountain
I have heard a lot of good reviews about this movie. But, I am not going to watch it. I am very impressionable (if there is such word) and easily gullible to any kind of sales pitch. I don't want to confuse my mind with the ideas from the story of this movie. Larry David wrote exactly what I wanted to say in his NYTimes op-ed last week. Click on the link below to read his full article.

Op-Ed Contributor
Cowboys Are My Weakness
By LARRY DAVID
SOMEBODY had to write this, and it might as well be me. I haven't seen "Brokeback Mountain," nor do I have any intention of seeing it. In fact, cowboys would have to lasso me, drag me into the theater and tie me to the seat, and even then I would make every effort to close my eyes and cover my ears.
And I love gay people. Hey, I've got gay acquaintances. Good acquaintances, who know they can call me anytime if they had my phone number. I'm for gay marriage, gay divorce, gay this and gay that. I just don't want to watch two straight men, alone on the prairie, fall in love and kiss and hug and hold hands and whatnot. That's all.
Is that so terrible? Does that mean I'm homophobic? And if I am, well, then that's too bad. Because you can call me any name you want, but I'm still not going to that movie.
To my surprise, I have some straight friends who've not only seen the movie but liked it. "One of the best love stories ever," one gushed. Another went on, "Oh, my God, you completely forget that it's two men. You in particular will love it."
"Why me?"
"You just will, trust me."
But I don't trust him. If two cowboys, male icons who are 100 percent all-man, can succumb, what chance to do I have, half- to a quarter of a man, depending on whom I'm with at the time? I'm a very susceptible person, easily influenced, a natural-born follower with no sales-resistance. When I walk into a store, clerks wrestle one another trying to get to me first. My wife won't let me watch infomercials because of all the junk I've ordered that's now piled up in the garage. My medicine cabinet is filled with vitamins and bald cures.
So who's to say I won't become enamored with the whole gay business? Let's face it, there is some appeal there. I know I've always gotten along great with men. I never once paced in my room rehearsing what to say before asking a guy if he wanted to go to the movies. And I generally don't pay for men, which of course is their most appealing attribute.
And gay guys always seem like they're having a great time. At the Christmas party I went to, they were the only ones who sang. Boy that looked like fun. I would love to sing, but this weighty, self-conscious heterosexuality I'm saddled with won't permit it.
I just know if I saw that movie, the voice inside my head that delights in torturing me would have a field day. "You like those cowboys, don't you? They're kind of cute. Go ahead, admit it, they're cute. You can't fool me, gay man. Go ahead, stop fighting it. You're gay! You're gay!"
Not that there's anything wrong with it.
Larry David appears in the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Shantaram
Came across this movie, Shantaram, when I was looking for a movie by Helena Bonham Cater. It was a proud moment when I read that the movie is going to be in English and Marathi. The plot seems interesting and the whole movie will be shot in India.

March of the Conservatives: Penguin Film as Political Fodder - New York Times
This is a really interesting article. It is an example of how something unrelated can be manipulated to further one's point of view.
On the conservative Web site WorldNetDaily.com, an opponent of abortion wrote that the movie "verified the beauty of life and the rightness of protecting it."At a conference for young Republicans, the editor of National Review urged participants to see the movie because it promoted monogamy.
A widely circulated Christian magazine said it made "a strong case for intelligent design."
"March of the Penguins," the conservative film critic and radio host Michael Medved said in an interview, is "the motion picture this summer that most passionately affirms traditional norms like monogamy, sacrifice and child rearing."
Andrew Coffin, writing in the widely circulated Christian publication World Magazine, that is a winning argument for the theory that life is too complex to have arisen through random selection. "That any one of these eggs survives is a remarkable feat - and, some might suppose, a strong case for intelligent design," he wrote. "It's sad that acknowledgment of a creator is absent in the examination of such strange and wonderful animals. But it's also a gap easily filled by family discussion after the film."
Ben Hunt, a minister at the 153 House Churches Network.... "Some of the circumstances they experienced seemed to parallel those of Christians," he said of the penguins. "The penguin is falling behind, is like some Christians falling behind. The path changes every year, yet they find their way, is like the Holy Spirit."
I wonder what these people will have to say if a movie is made depicting the lives of bonobo chimpanzees? Bonobos are probably the most closely gentically-related primates to humans. We share 98% of our DNA with the bonobos. They should provide some guiding priciples to humans and not some birds who live in the cold extremes of the earth.
Bonobos live a relatively peaceful life compared to chimpanzees. Sex is an important way to ensure group stability and ease tensions. Bonobos substitute sex for aggression, and sexual interactions occur more often among bonobos than among other primates. Reduced male aggression, strong bonds between males and females, and frequent sex (including male-to-male and female-to-female) characterize bonobo society. However, the rate of reproduction in the wild is about the same as that of chimpanzees (a single infant is born every five to six years) beginning at age 12.

Bond... James Bond
Being a James Bond movies fan, I must have seen every Bond movie at least 5 times and some of them many many more times. I like all the Sean Connery Bond movies better eventhough not as technologically advanced as the newer films. If I have to choose my favorite Bond movie, it would be a tie between "Dr. No" and "Goldfinger". What say you?

Page 3
Finally, the search for a likeable hindi movie is over. It took more than one year since "Ab tak Chhappan", but, "Page 3" was quite good. The movie spans a few months in the life of an upcoming journalist. Madhavi Sharma, starts off as a reporter for page 3 stuff (covering parties and events of rich & famous) of the newspaper. Then, moves over to cover the crime beat and stumbles onto a story that is too big for her to deal with. Very good story and screenplay. It is well directed and holds interest till the end. The heroine, Konkana Sensharma was perfect as the reporter. All the actors have performed very well.
V didn't like the end as all the bad guys went scot-free. I liked it because on top of presenting a good story very well, it didn't have all those annoying things that are part of almost every hindi movie. No melodramatic screaming, no lovers running around trees, no songs, no overacting and most of all, no comedians like Johny Lever or Kader Khan.
I highly recommend it. I think I am going to watch all Madhur Bhandarkar movies in the future.

Bunty aur Babli
If someone tells me that the producers of this movie bribed the news reporters to write good reviews, I would believe it in a heartbeat. How else could you explain such rave reviews for a movie that doesn't deserve even 10% of the accolades?
The movie can be described by one marathi word: "AacharatpaNA". I am unable to translate that in english. Someone with better grasp of english, please help.
Starting the movie off with a useless song was not a good idea, at least according to me. Then, the hero of the movie insulting his father and telling him that his (father's) life was not worth living, didn't go very well with me, either. The story just didn't go anywhere for a long time. They just keep fooling people with one trick after another. The only interesting one was the washing machine job. Selling Taj Mahal was a little too far fetched. We just couldn't watch it after the drinking scene by Bachchans and I don't think we missed anything. Don't really care to know what happened in the end.
Amitabh Bachchan exemplified how to be obnoxious on screen. His performance was a perfect example of overacting. I hope he was doing it to help upcoming actors to learn what not to do. Rani Mukherji was a total miscast. She was good in Veer-Zaara. Rani should accept the fact that she is not Aishwarya Rai or one of those new svelte young actresses and continue to do roles like Veer-Zaara. If I want to see a flabby jiggly gut, I can look in the mirror.
Overall, I was quite disappointed with the movie.
Oh yeah, just remembered something... Every time Bunty & Babli were about to do a job, there was a 'ttrrr ttrrrr' sound in the background. It was so annoying. First couple of times, I thought that a frog or some insect got into our house.

Crappiest movie ever
Yesterday, I watched one of the most crappiest Hindi movies ever, on AZN masala weekend. My brother was visiting for the weekend and we had a blast watching it together. Missed the beginning and hence don't know the title. But, the movie was so bad that I want to know the title. I tried searching on Google and on IMDB but, no success. If anyone knows the title please let me know.
Here are some clues... Raj Babbar was the villain, Kalicharan, the underworld boss. Dharmendra was the police commissioner who was fighting the underworld. His sister and brother-in-law (journalist) were killed by Kalicharan. So, it is a personal fight. A witness to the murder, Deepa, was the heroin of the movie. (We couldn't identify the actress; seemed like she was from south Indian film industry) She was good with martial arts and did a lot of action. In stead of killing her off, the villains get her trapped in some silly plot and send her off to jail. She gets martial arts training in the jail. Dharmendra believes her story and helps her get paroled. Then, uses her as a deadly weapon to get to the bad guys. Aditya Pancholi made a guest appearance. Other names for guest appearances were Ayub Khan and Simran. These were shown in the end. Everything about this movie was bad: story, dialogues, acting, editing, songs, everything.
We had a huge laugh about the last frame of the movie which read "Remember, it was a K.C. Bokadia production". Almost a warning... Don't watch any more of K.C. Bokadia's movies in the future.
Again, if anyone knows the title of this movie, I'd like to know.
Update: The title of the movie was "Gundagardi". Please don't watch it even if your life depends on it.

Pulp Fiction accessories
This is an essential accessory for all the "Pulp Fiction" fans out there. I would love to get one for myself, but, 'boss' won't approve of it.
Some memorable dialogues from Pulp Fiction, one of the best movies ever made.

The Revenge of the Sith
Thanks to "Summer hours" at work, we went to watch "The Revenge of the Sith" yesterday. Loved it. As usual, the acting was atrocious and dialogues were horrible. The best actors were Palpatine and Yoda; one of them is computer generated. Overall, the movie was very fast paced and full of action. There is no dull moment in the whole 2 hours. The transformation of Anakin is shown very nicely. Obi-wan's fight with General Grievous was awesone.
The best dialogue was delivered by Anakin while talking to Obi-wan, in the same style as W: "You are either with me or you are my enemy". Also, I can imagine Carl Rove sending out a message last year during the election campaign: "Execute order 66." Fiction imitating real life or other way around?
By the time we finished eating Sushi and rushed to the movie theater, we missed first 5-10 minutes of the movie. That gives me a reason to watch it again.

Winged Migration, II
Got my own copy of Winged Migration. Ashwini and I watched it for a few minutes (given her short 10-15 minute attention span) yesterday. She was totally fascinated by all the birds. There was a scene where a baby seagull takes a plunge from a high cliff and flies for the first time. She made me rewind that scene and watched it over and over.

Bride and Prejudice
* silly and stupid. was expecting better from Gurinder.
* aishwarya spoke in a weird accent that was very annoying.
* the songs were awful. just like the broadway musicals.
* story was trashy. couldn't imagine those parents that were almost hawking their daughters to any man they could find. they were acting more like pimps than parents.

Winged Migration
Just finished watching "Winged Migration" on TV. It was just beautiful. Great cinematography. Very little commentary and very few images of human beings in the whole 90 minutes. The astonishingly captured images do all the talking. Highly recommended for people in any age group. I think Ashwini will love this. Am going to order the DVD right now.

Hulchul
Tried watching Hulchul last Saturday. The promos (and that unreliable source, again) promised non-stop laughter and a funfest. Instead it was all about shouting matches between the characters and potty humour. Couldn't take it for more than half an hour or so.
Don't even think about watching it, unless of course, you enjoy shouting matches and potty humour.

Dhoom machaale dhoom...
After hearing praises from some unreliable sources, I decided to ignore my dear friend Vinayak's admonitions about 'Dhoom'. Within first 10 minutes, I knew that I had made a mistake. All this movie had was meaningless story with mindless stunts and action.
Children of bollywood stars shouldn't get into acting just because their parents did. Abhishek Bachchan acts like a mannequin. Esha Deol definitely got the wrong sets of genes from her parents. It is quite sad for her that her mother looks more beautiful than her.
People who get into movies just because of connections are even worse. This Chopra chap who played Ali, is in the movies just because he is Yash Chopra's son or nephew or something like that. My butt looks prettier than his face. Yes, I did go in the bathroom and checked in the mirror before writing this.
The only redeeming qualities of the movie is its short length and the title song 'Dhoom'. Stay away from Dhoom if you haven't already suffered through it.

Could someone please enlighten me with the meaning of this movie's title? From the previews, it seems like a Bollywood version of 'Zorro'. Is that a correct assumption?

Awesomely bad movies
Watched the Saturday afternoon Indian programs on International Channel after a long time.
According AVS TV show, these five are "awesomely bad movies":
ajooba
mela
main prem ki diwani hoon
jaani dushman
aap mujhe achche lagne lage
It must have been very tough to choose only 5, considering 99.9% of all Hindi movies made are bad. Maybe, if I watch these, I won't criticise other Hindi movies.
Also saw preview of 'hulchul' starring Akshaye Khanna. He seems to have grown a lot of new hair. Would like to know if it is a hair transplant or result of using Rogaine or some ayurvedic medication.

Bollywood is motherless
Nirupa Roy: Bollywood's favourite cine-ma dies in oblivion
Bollywood lost its best on-screen mother. She was so good at doing the 'Mother' roles. She must have played mother to every great Bollywood actor, even the ones that were older than her...
In 1955 at the prime of her career, ... she switched to mother's roles, playing Dev Anand's mom in Subodh Mukherjee's "Munimji" when she was actually seven years younger than him.

Main Hoon Na
It is a freaking ri-god-damned-diculous movie. I didn't watch it (or any movie) for so long and why the hell did I decide to torture myself with it now???
Movie critic for a Marathi newspaper aptly called it: "Main Bindok Hoon Na". Should have seen that review before watching it.

Movie Friday
Thanks to all you guys for your movie suggestions, but in the end we decided that eating Japanese food peacefully was better than any movie we could watch in the theater. Went to Yotsuba, our favorite Japanese place. The waitresses know us there. It feels good to be recognized and get special treatment at a restaurant. Tried a new sake, Yamadanishiki. It was quite good. V had her usual plum wine. We had tempura and 5 sushi rolls. It was a little too much for two of us but we finished it all. This was follwed with a nice nap before we picked up Ashwini. Overall, it was a nice Friday afternoon. No more half day Fridays till next June.

Last chance for Summer movies
As we officially move from· Summer into Fall, our 'Summer hours' at work come to end this week. From June through September, we were working one extra hour from Monday to Thursday, to take half days on Friday. V and I took these opportunities to watch a couple of movies and to eat out peacefully while Ashwini stayed in daycare.
Tomorrow is our last chance to watch a movie. Could anyone please suggest 'must-see on big screen' summer movies that are still playing in theaters?

Rajanikanth antics
I got a forwarded email from a friend describing some deeds of Rajanikanth which are not possible to perform in our known Universe under the laws of Physics as we know them. Would any Tamil movie buffs please tell me that this is not true and is just made up by someone for this email joke.
| 1) Rajanikanth has a Brain Tumor which, according to the doctors can't be cured and his death is imminent. In one of the fights, our great Rajanikanth is shot in the head. To everybody's surprise, the bullet passes through his ears taking away the tumor along with it and he is cured. Long Live Rajanikanth.
2) In one of the movies, Rajanikanth is confronted with 3 gangsters. Rajanikanth has a gun but unf ortunately only one bullet. Guess, what he does....... He holds a knife in his hand and throws at the middle gangster..& shoots the bullet towards the knife. The knife cuts the bullet into 2 pieces and kills both the gangsters on each side of the middle gangster & the knife kills the middle one. 3) Rajanikanth is chased by a gangster. Rajanikanth has a revolver but he has no bullets in it. Guess, what he does. Nah not even in your remotest imaginations. He waits for the gangster to shoot. As soon as the gangster shoots, Rajanikanth opens the bullet compartment of his revolver and catches the bullet. Then, he closes the bullet compartment and fires his gun. Bang... And the gangster dies.... |

David Dhavan
Was watching AVS or TV ASIA on TV and saw a blurb with David Dhavan in it. From watching his movies, I always had an image of a young, savvy gentleman as David Dhavan. But, he looked like someone you would find as an owner of a grocery store. I was just shocked by the extent with which my mental image was different than the reality.

Fahrenheit 9/11
Watched it last Friday and was impressed by it. Very well made with a lot of information and emotions packed in. It is not even 2 hours long, but, I felt exhausted when I was walking out of the theater. Although there was a lot to talk about, we couldn't talk much during our car-ride back. I guess there was much more to think about. I am sure our faces just lit up to see Ashwini on the way home. It was a joy to pick her up from her daycare after the movie.
Some parts of the movie could be considered as a one-sided story, but, it is presented very well and unless the other side is told, it is very believable. It is also very hard for families of US servicemen and women to show that what they are doing in Iraq is useless or unwanted and they are losing their lives unnecessarily. I guess Moore is counting on convincing these families to go out and vote in Novemeber.
There is a lot in the movie that shocked me. Here are some of those things that I can remember.
- The prologue to Fahrenheit 9/11 revisits Bush's rise to power in late 2000, paying particular attention to democratic leadership counseling "acceptance" of the non-election. A scene of members of the House, all of them African-American, coming forward to contest the result of the election, while Gore calmly rules their objections inadmissible because no senator, not one out of 47 or 48, would satisfy Congressional rules by signing on to them. This was something that I had never seen, heard or read about before.
- The seven minutes that W spent reading 'My pet goat' after hearing about the second crash at WTC.
- The airlift of Saudi nationals, especially, bin Laden family members, when all the air traffic around the nation was grounded. Saudi ambassador, Prince bandar, dining at the White House on 9/13. Personal and financial ties of W with the bin Laden family and other Saudi interests.
- Up close and personal tour of destroyed houses and dead Iraqi civilians.
- American soldiers horsing around with dead Iraqis caught on tape. Other soldiers describing the music that they play in the tanks while attacking. Christmas eve raid of an Iraqi house to look for a suspect with Christmas music playing in the background was very eerie.
- Images of wounded and dead American soldiers in Iraq and interviews with wounded and recovering soldiers in US, showing their stumps of arms and legs.
- The recruiting tactics of the US Army.
- Only 1 out of 530 or so members of Congress have a child serving in the Military.
There were some things that were done very tastefully. The 9/11 incident was just implied through some images that didn't show the twin towers or planes hitting them or dead bodies. Lila Lipscomb, the mother of a US soldier who died in Iraq was given full freedom to tell her story. Her reading of the last letter that she received from her son is very moving. She manages to stay calm throughout the last part of the movie but, simply breaks down when goes to visit the White House. This whole story is very emotional and presented very well.
On a lighter note, Michael Moore goes around the Capitol in a Ice-cream truck reading out the US Patriot Act to the members of Senate and House. He confronts many members of Congress to sign up their children to join Army to go and fight the war in Iraq that they supported.
Saudi ambassador to US, Prince Bandar is very close to the Bush family and is supposed to be nicknamed 'Bandar Bush'. They wouldn't have done that, only if they knew the meaning of word 'Bandar' in Hindi. You can't have two people in a family with the same name. ;)
I highly recommend it to everyone. A must-see.

Thok de saale ko???
Watched 'ab tak chhappan' last night. It is just awesome. Nana Patekar plays an officer in the special operations division of Mumbai police that 'deals' with gangsters. Nana is great as a cool and calculating cop. He seems so unpredictable throughout the movie. It is hard to figure out what he'll do next. Nana's interaction with a new officer on his first day reminded me of 'The Training Day', another great must-watch movie. Denzel Washington in that movie is also a special operations cop who is as unpredictable as Nana.
'Ab tak chhappan' is a very well scripted movie; no loose ends. Again, no idiotic songs. I think I am going to watch all Ram Gopal Varma movies at least for that one reason. The story moves at a fast pace and it is over before one knows it. A nice completely unpredictable ending. There is some violence but it is not gory. No long drawn-out fight scenes or torture of prisoners. It is shown in a casual way, like 'Pulp Fiction'.
I highly recommend it to everyone. A must-watch for Nana fans like me. Finally a director who has used his talents properly. He is so much different than his crappy streak of 'Krantiveer'-like movies.
P.S. This must be some kind of record. First of all, watching 2 hindi movies in 2 weeks. That doesn't happen often... And liking them both. This is the first time ever.

Ek Hasina Thi
Watched it over the weekend. It was a good thriller. I like Ram Gopal Varma movies. First attractive feature is that they get done in 2 hours. Mostly because, there are no useless songs. I am sure he saves a lot of money by not going to exotic locations to film something that has nothing to do with the story of the movie.
This one has a gripping story and is presented in a technically competant manner. Urmila does another role of a maniac and does a good job. "Phoolan Devi" Seema Biswas as a woman police inspector is excellent. Saif Ali Khan did well too. Did he really have to be unshaven throughout the movie? But, he is so much better than Amir I-am-so-good-kiss-my-feet Khan, Salman I-can't-act-but-look-at-my-body khan or Shah Rukh I-may-not-have-Parkinson's-but-I-like-to-shake-all-the-time Khan. Part of the movie is in a women's prison. I am not sure how real all that stuff was. Many women in there are shown mentally deranged and quite menacing. That would be quite realistic if same statistics are true in India as compared to US, where about 10% of prison population has some mental problems. The action scenes are quite believable and not the usual 20 villain lackeys attacking one hero but, get beat. The background score is quite good and not too loud.
Overall, I would recommend anyone to watch this movie.

Jogger's Park and Baghban
Watched these two movies during the last 3 weeks or so. It was good to see that actors were actually in roles suitable for their age and not the usual middle-aged-men-acting-like-teenagers running around trees in a park. Both the films dealt with changes brought by retirement in someone's life and their family's lives.
"Jogger's Park" was very well made. Everyone acted well, especially, Perizaad Zorbian. It was hard to believe that this was her second-ever movie. No complaints except the last 15-20 minutes, when Victor Banerjee (a retired judge) is threatened with exposing his fling with a young model (Perizaad) in the media and the lecture on morality delivered by his daughter. They could have just ended the movie when Victor and Perizaad decide not to see each other anymore and go their own way. That would have been a perfect ending for me. Oh, yeah! Also, they could have done without that stupid song featuring Perizaad.
"Baghban" was basically a time-tried story of 'children not treating their elderly retired parents well'. BTW, what does Baghban mean? I went to the kitchen for something when they talked about it.
- The best part of the movie was Hema Malini. She looked better than any of the other younger women in the movie. Actually, she looked better than even herself from older movies. It is amazing how gracefully she has aged. On the other hand, Jaya Bhaduri (not in this movie) looks like a bloated frog.
- Amitabh Bachchan did a good job as the tortured father. My only suggestion to him would be to get a better wig or just expose the receding hairline. Baldness is nothing to be ashamed of. It would be much better than his stupid wig. His hairstyle is still languishing in the late 70s-early 80s. Maybe, that is when he got this wig made.
- I don't know when Indian story/script writters will realise that the difference between good and bad doesn't have to be as much as the tip of mount everest and deepest point in the pacific ocean. The biological family of AB and HM treats them so badly and their adopted son worships them as God. This is just crazy.
- How could anyone not have any money to repair broken glasses, but have a big mansion that was kept vacant?
- Would someone tell Salman Khan that to sound sincere, he doesn't need to whisper? All through the movie, he sounded as if he was talking on the '1-800-phonesex' line.
- When I was watching the movie I had many more comments, but it has been a few days since then and can't remember any more.
- I would recommend this movie to everyone just to see how good Hema Malini looks. You can actually forward the tape/DVD as soon as she walks out of the picture.

Kal ho naa ho: again...
Finally, I watched it last night. I decided to ignore minor things like: after ordering a double espresso at Starbucks, Naina walks out with a huge 20oz cup. But, still a lot of things bothered me making this just another ordinary movie not meeting the hyped-up pre-release expectations.
- The singing grandmas and singing Rohit's family was simply annoying.
- The whole Gia episode was completely unnecessary. Why do some characters in Hindi movies (Jaya Bachhan in this one) need to be better than God? Isn't it sufficient for them to be just good or simply 'not bad'?
- Aman seemed quite healthy for someone with a weak heart that needs a heart transplant. He was jumping around and dancing around, which was definitely not helping his heart condition. He probably would have had a better chance of getting that transplant in India. There is such a big line of patients needing a transplant and not enough donors in the US.
- Meeting between Naina and Dr. Priya at the shopping center was just a pathetic attempt to extend the movie for another 15-20 minutes. It didn't add any complexity to the plot, just made it boring when I was expecting it to end.
- In the end, what kind of life do Naina and Rohit expect to lead with the big cloud of Aman hanging over all the time. His love, his sacrifice, etc. It is a marriage perfectly ripe for divorce.

Kal ho naa ho
I haven't seen this movie yet. Was planning to, but, reading this review on Rediff was enough to change my mind. It is an interesting dissection of the movie by someone who lives in New York. Worth reading...September 23, 2003
If 'Lord of the Rings'
If 'Lord of the Rings' is made in Hindi, they would not have to animate Gollum. Shah Rukh Khan is perfect to play that role. All the nervous twitches and shakiness match perfectly.
