NCAA Football 2004 week #13

November 29th, 2004

Last week of regular season college football brought on more heartache for Nebraska. They got beat by Colorado. I was hoping for a win. But, this loss translates into first losing season after 43 years and breaking the longest running bowl game streak in the country. Nebrska played in a bowl game for 35 years consecutively. They will sit at home and watch others play around New Year’s time. This is absolutely the bottom. The only good thing about it is that the only way from here is up. Hopefully, Bill Callahan will get the team in better game shape next year with his west coast offense and we’ll at least have a winning season next year.

Texas beat Texas A&M but, they will most likely be left out of the BCS bowls. The chances of Cal losing to Southern Miss are close to nil.

There were no big surprises during this last week. USC and Oklahoma kept their 1 and 2 BCS rankings and that will make them eligible to play for the championship unless Oklahoma loses in the Big12 championship game to Colorado. That is quite unlikely. Auburn got left out of the National Championship game eventhough they played better football caompared to Oklahoma and had an unbeaten season.

Michigan will play in the Rose Bowl. All of the bowl schedule will come out soon. All the best to the teams playing in bowl games. This is the first time that College football season is over for me in November.

iShares Cohen & Steers Realty Majors

November 29th, 2004

For diversification in real estate other than the house that we live in, I started periodic investment in an ETF (Exchange-traded Fund), iShares Cohen & Steers Realty Majors (ICF). This was one of the real estate funds recommended by Kiplinger’s magazine.

Thanksgiving 2004…

November 29th, 2004

It was lovely to have a white Thanksgiving this year. We had our first significant snowfall on Wednesday and the snow stuck around for a couple of days.

It was a nice Thanksgiving as usual. A lot of our friends were able to join us for the feast. We had 12 adults and 8 children. It felt like the house was full after a long time. We spent most of Wednesday and Thursday morning cooking. All the guests showed up around noon on Thursday. Due to Ashwini’s nut allergies, it was a nut-free event. Here is the menu…

Appetizers:
- Chex mix
- Brandied apples and goat cheese
- Brie with fig jam on crackers
- Spiced apple cider

Main course:
- Green bean casserole
- Broccoli and rice casserole
- Cranberry delight
- Acorn squash stuffed with wild rice, raisins and cranberries
- Creamy mashed potatoes with chives and gravy
- Pasta salad
- Broccoli and cheese salad

Desserts:
- Death by chocolate
- Yellow cake with fruits
- New York style cheesecake

Making a real cheesecake was new this year and I was very apprehensive about how it will turn out. It was like a cholesterol bomb with 2 and half pounds of cream cheese and 7 eggs. It was just heavenly. So creamy and soft and silky. Yummm. The only problem is that because it is so big, we can’t make it for just ourselves. I won’t be able to make it unless we have a big gathering. That means I’ll have to wait till Thanksgiving next year.

Unfortunately, I didn’t designate someone to be the photographer, so, we don’t have many good photos. I don’t think I have a photo of the desserts. *sob*

Ashwini was very excited to have so many kids around. But, at the same time it was really nerve-racking for her as she had to share all her toys and books with them.

Overall, we had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We got to see a lot of our old friends and share a good meal with them. Hopefully, we’ll do this more often in the coming year.

NCAA Football 2004 week #12

November 23rd, 2004

Nebraska and Texas were both resting on Saturday to prepare for their respective matchups against Colorado and Texas A&M on Friday after Thanksgiving.

Looks like hopes are fading for Texas to get into one of the BCS bowl games. They get in only if California loses to Southern Miss which is not very likely. Mayuresh explained the ‘at-large’ births in BCS, etc in a comment to my last football post. Check it out if interested.

One of the biggest matches last week was Florida at Florida State. Gators beat the Seminoles on their home field for the first time and ironically, this was the last game for Ron Zook as the coach of Florida Gators because he was fired earlier in the year.

Wisconsin lost second game in a row after being unbeaten for the first 9 games. That puts Michigan in the slot for Rose Bowl as Big10 champions even after losing their last game against Ohio State. I thought Michigan would win that game easily but, I was wrong.

Steve Spurrier accepted the head coach position at South Carolina after Lou Holtz retired from there. He will be coaching the Game Cocks for the next 7 years.

Notre Dame faces USC next Saturday. I hope they get their butt kicked really bad. :)

Let her run away….

HC grants protection to Teesta

Don’t know why she is given this special protection. Doesn’t the court think there is a flight risk? She can run away to her kind in W. Bengal or China.

Here are the activities of this social activist…

Setalvad had sought the protection fearing arrest in connection with allegations made against her by the prime witness in the Best Bakery case, Zaheera Shaikh, that she was “pressurised” to give false evidence in the court.

Zaheera had filed an affidavit on November 3 before the Vadodara collector alleging she was forced to move to Mumbai at the behest of Setalvad, kept in wrongful confinement for nearly a month, made to sign documents and pressurised to falsely depose before a Mumbai court.

I hope they find her guilty and burn her at the stake.

First photo taken through my telescope using the Nikon D70. It is not great. I still need to play with aligning all the optical elements properly to get a crisp clear image. Hopefully, I’ll get some time to play with it when we have clear skies.

Blog and get fired, part II

November 17th, 2004

Here is another person who got fired for posting photos from her workplace on her blog. I had posted about this guy who got fired from Microsoft for posting workplace photos almost one year ago.

Be careful about what you post on your blog, people! It is in public domain. Your employer can view it too.

Yahoo! News – Powell and Three Others Leaving Cabinet

Colin Powell should have resigned a long long time ago. Now, after this loss of a sane voice from the cabinet, get ready for the ‘Dick and Donny Show’. Scary, eh?! It would have been even scarier if Ashcroft hadn’t resigned.
