Roger Waters and The Dark Side of the Moon

September 19th, 2006

Went to see Roger Waters of Pink Floyd in concert last night. It was alright, not as good as the “Division Bell” tour in 1994 performed by the other three members of Pink Floyd. That show had so much more production value with richer visuals, better light/laser effects and most of all, better music.

The show opened with “In the Flesh” as we hurried through the hallways of the Palace at Auburn Hills. We walked in just as the song ended and they started playing “Mother”.

Here is the setlist:

In The Flesh, Mother, Set The Controls For the Heart Of The Sun, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Have A Cigar, Wish You Were Here, Southampton Dock, The Fletcher Memorial Home, Perfect Sense parts 1 and 2, Leaving Beirut, Sheep.

Intermission

Entire Dark Side of the Moon: Speak to me, Breathe, On the run, Time, The great gig in the sky, Money, Us and Them, Any colour you like, Brain damage, Eclipse.

ENCORE: The Happiest Days Of Our Lives, Another Brick In The Wall (Pt 2), Vera, Bring the Boys back Home, Comfortably Numb.

There were many reviews mentioning Roger Waters was lip-synching during this tour. We were sitting too far back to notice.

Considering that Roger had to replace most of the original band that played music in Pink Floyd, they did a good job in the second half playing Dark Side of the Moon. Gave me a chance to scream my lungs out for more than half an hour till my throat ached. It had been a long time since I did that. “Time” and “Us and Them” were done very well along with the Speak/Breathe/On the run set. Vocals on “The Greatest Gig in the Sky” were very very good.

I was totally disappointed with their performance of “Shine On” and “Wish You Were Here”. We were not familiar with songs from “The Final Cut” that had some political message, but weren’t very musically appealing. “Sheep” was good with the flying pig plastered with political graffitti.

Overall, it was a good show. We enjoyed it a lot. If you missed the show or don’t want to spend $70 for tickets, get the newly released PULSE DVD for the 1994 show. It is equally enjoyable if not more.

Hmm.. that was a good review, i have never been a great fan of Waters, as much as I am a fan of Gilmour. Maybe, mainly cos I started listening to floyd with Division Bell, and till date is my favorite album. Pulse is just amazing! :)

we went to see him on friday.. the concert was great.. roger waters is exteremely political i mean he was there to perform wall whn the berlin wall came down.. so i was not surprised.. his first solo album was good.. tht song perfect sense 1&2 is from the album.. it sounds like one of the songs from the final cut.. anyways i liked it even with the political message.. the arena that we went to was an open arena.it was fun to see the “the pig” fly away as the song ended..

Well, not sure what show you saw, but I just saw him in Chicago. I have seen the Div Bell tour, Gilmours solo tour and all of Waters’ Solo tours and this concert was just amazing. Your comment about starting to listen to Floyd with Div Bell shows you have no clue about the history or acheivement of the band, too bad your missing alot of great music.

For those of you who missed it, this tour was great tribute to Syd Barret, albeit with Waters typical political messages there also. The songs of the first set from In thte Flesh, to Wish you Were here are all tributes to there lost leader Syd Barret.

Although Gilmore is a GREAT guitarist, all of Pink Floyds creativity and acheivement came from Nick Mason and Roger Waters.

Go Back and listen to the early stuff, pre Dark Side of the Moon you might be pleasantly surprised. But with all Pink Floyd Material you need to listen to the Album (an art form lost in todays single / download world).

    Cheers

I feel privileged to have made it to a Pink floyd show. Roger waters is great. I luckily got the tickets 2 days prior to the show. The music was greatt as always. The sound effect at the Palace was fantabulous considering the bass shaking your chair. The crowd was great too-remember how so many of them lit up their lighters at wish you were here and for encore. Also when he started the show with’ in the flesh’ and he says- theres one smoking a joint, guys go crazy really. Roger waters sings passionately. The music was great too- almost pink floydian. I eagerly await a DVD if it comes out soon. keeping my fingers crossed. auro.

I saw the concert in Irvine, Ca. And thought it was great. I saw the original “Dark Side of the Moon” concert at the LA Sports Arena, along with “Animals”, “The Wall”, “Division Bell”, and Waters last tour, and I thought this compared very well to any. The next best thing to having Pink Floyd back together again. Great, large scale show. Particularly liked the lazer pyramid and spectrum.

Waters once said that he was disappointed to see Gilmour perform The Wall songs on an extravagant set (laser, projections etc.) as The Wall album (and the concert which followed) itself was a message against lavishly produced live concerts..

I have arrived to try and spread the word about a new web page I have created at

    http://www.guitarnstuff.com/pink-floyd/

It contains videos (new and old) of the Floyd, including some of the Pompeii concert, so I am hoping that it will be of interest to any fans who might find this page!

    Best wishes

Holy Cow! I saw the Boston show. I was absolutely stunned. Having never seen a Pink Floyd Show but old enough to have if it had become available, I feel like I finally made it to an actual Floyd performance. I suppose if the original band was still together it would have been lovely, but I will say that maybe it was because they were really a “cover band” not including Mr. Waters, or maybe it was his unrelenting desire for the perfect audio and visual experience, BUT for the most part the Dark Side Album was NOTE for NOTE. An amazing performance. How many generations know this band’s music library word for word and note for note? Love the improvisation found at a live show, and there was a little of that, but as one of millions who sings Floyd at the top of my lungs in the car- it was an absolute life-centering experience to hear those guys hit every note and have the visuals accompany perfectly the mood and music. Love Waters, love Gilmour, love Barrett- This was an amazing show that I will never, ever forget.

It’s one of the best part of the concert for me.Singing the touching and inspiring “Mother” song while playing the guitar as well. It’s really fantastic and everyone in the crowd enjoys it a lot.
