Loss on home sale

February 29th, 2008

Just read on IRS website that loss on home sale is a non-deductible personal loss. @#%$^@&$()  &*$^$*%) #_###$@

My hopes of getting the tax bill under 5 digits have been crushed totally and completely.

India ETF

February 29th, 2008

While there were many Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that invested in many single countries, there was none that focused on India alone. There are many Asia or emerging markets ETFs that include India, but no India ETF. Recently, that changed with creation of a new ETF: WisdomTree India Earnings Fund (EPI).

WisdomTree index is based on earnings of the companies and currently it holds about 150 companies. Because earnings is the main consideration for selection in the index, it is full of big stable companies with low P/E ratios. They also take into account the investability of a company as Indian government restricts the fraction of any company stock that can be held by foreign entities. This index portfolio has a dividend yield of 1.23% and P/E of about 14. The top 5 holdings are:
1. Reliance Industries Ltd
2. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd.
3. Infosys Technologies Ltd.
4. Bharti Airtel Limited
5. ICICI Bank Ltd.
They account for one third of total investment. Annual expense ratio for the fund is 0.88% which is not bad.

If you were waiting for an India focused ETF, this is it. I think it provides a good opportunity to invest in the biggest Indian companies in a disciplined and diversified way. (Disclaimer: I am not a financial expert or adviser. These are my opinions. Make your own decisions after reading the prospectus carefully. I am not responsible for your loss.)

Powershares India Fund from Powershares will be available for investment soon and will be good to have another option for ETF investing in India.

I like it…

February 27th, 2008

Whenever Adit asked for anything… food, toy or book… he always says, “I like it. I like that one…” We were scratching our heads thinking how come he likes everything that is around him. We were congratulating ourselves for being such great parents that we have filled our house with all the things that Adit likes.

Then, one day we figured it out. At school or at home, he often gets asked, politely, if I may say so, “Adit, would you like a banana?”, “Would you like to draw?” or “Would you like to read?” which sometimes can be substitued for “Adit, do you want a banana?”, “Do you want to draw?” or “Do you want to read?”  Because of these questions, circuits for “like” and “want” are crossed in his head. He uses “like” when he means “like” and also in place of “want”. Now, it all makes sense.

Valentine’s day

February 15th, 2008

It looks like beginning of a new tradition. For two years in a row, I had dinners at nice restaurants with my co-workers on Valentine’s day instead of my wife.

Trip to San Diego

February 15th, 2008

I picked one of the worst days to travel. There was an icestorm on the east coast on Tuesday night and I was supposed to fly on Wednesday morning. My Continental flight to Newark got canceled and they put me on USAirways to go to San Diego through Charlotte. Turned out that Charlotte to San Diego flight wasn’t direct and had a one hour stop in Phoenix. So, instead of arriving at my scheduled time of 11:50 am, I reached San Diego at 7:00 pm PST. Another hour after that to get my bag and find a taxi to get to my hotel. After leaving home at 4 am EST, I reached my destination after about 19 hours. It took me shorter than that to reach Mumbai last month. I am definitely convinced that महाराष्ट्र परिवहन मंडल (S.T.) runs a tighter ship than most of the airlines in the USA.

The Cog

February 12th, 2008

Here is the original Honda ad made using spare parts and here is a video with similar idea seen in the ad, but is more elaborate.

The Honda video at least seems to be one shot unless there is some super-slick editing, but there is no way of telling if the second video was made in one shot or not. If the whole thing really worked like that, they are great engineers.

Thanks for the link, Mahesh.
