It is already well-known that taller people are more confident, happy and succesful. Now, there is research from University of Groningen and University of Valencia that proves that short men and women are prone to be more jealous.
So, if you are extremely jealous, check your height. If you are short, then you have an explanation for your jealous behaviour. On the other hand, if you are short, just give in to jealousy. You can’t fight the natural instinct.

Ashwini: When is Devenmama coming to visit us?
Me: I don’t know.
Ashwini: He came such a long time ago. He should visit us again.
Me: Ask him when you talk with him on the phone.
Ashwini: Maybe, his house will break down in earthquake and then, he will come.
I hope it doesn’t take something that drastic to make him come visit us.

Pre-ordered two new books from amazon.com. 5% extra discount for pre-ordering.
David Sedaris’ book comes out in June and Sarah Vowell’s in October this year. I’ll probably buy audio versions of these when they come out on audible.com as well. Both these authors read their own books for the audio editions and do a fabulous job.

I absolutely love people who smoke as long as they are not puffing in my vicinity. Cigarette makers are humongously profitable companies and good for investments even after all the legal issues etc. I own Altria (MO) and will continue to do so for a long time to come. It costs Altria about $16-17 to make 1000 cigarettes. The price for a pack of cigarettes is about $5. Even if more than half of that goes in taxes, Altria gets at least $2 per pack, I suppose. That is $200 for goods that cost $17 to make. Excellent profit margin!
On the other hand, my employer makes Chantix, the latest smoking-cessation drug to come on the market. So, people who want to stop smoking after generating some revenue for Altria, can now make revenue for my employer by buying Chantix.
Now, if people could smoke for some time, then use Chantix to stop smoking and then take it up again after a few years and repeat this cycle over and over again, it will be perfect for my portfolio.

This whole affair of problems in the financial institutions is starting to piss me off. Barely one week after trumpeting their solid financial situation all over the media, Bear Stearns had liquidity problems last Thursday… why? because they made bad decisions and bought bad investments. Are they paying for it? Yes! Everyone who worked there must have owned company stock and that lost value big time: from $60 to $2 in 2 days. I feel sorry for a big chunk of employees who are guiltless and were not involved in these shady investment decisions.
Bear Stearns had borrowed $30 for every dollar of their assets to finance bad investments. It seems like this is a model at many investment banks. We’ll just have to wait and see when others get into the same situations as BS. This is just like people who were buying houses with little or no money down and hoping to gain with increase in real estate prices. BS invested a lot in these shady mortgage-backed securities hoping to make a big profit. Now that these investments are losing their value, BS has more debt than the value of their assets. They were not allowed to get into bankruptcy because that would have caused a market crash and everyone including me, would have lost money. With the bail-out deal worked out between the Fed and JP Morgan and Bear Stearns, the Federal Reserve basically bought these bad mortgage-backed investments. It was not a direct buy, but loaning money with these investments as a collateral means the same thing in the end. Now, when these investments fail (there is no doubt that they WILL fail), taxpayers like me will be left holding the bag. So, no matter what, law-abiding and fiscally-disciplined people like me lose money. Only the amount differs. Maybe, it is time for me to get into some shady borderline-legal deals to make profit. But, wait! Nobody is going to bail me out if my investments fail. That is reserved only for the professionals: MBA and CPA fu$*ups who play with other people’s money.
Disclaimer: This is just an angry rant. All the arguments may not make sense.

On Saturday, we went to see the Diego Live show. Both Adit and Ashwini were just totally amazed to see their favorite characters: Diego, Alicia, baby Jaguar and most of all, Dora! They just loved it. It was pretty good broadway-style production. Definitely exceeded our expectations.
On the way back, Adit was asking us to turn the Dora DVD on in the car.
Adit: I like it. Dora DVV. I like it. Dora DVV. I like it… (repeating over and over and over….)
Ashwini: We can’t watch Dora on DVD, Adit. Dora and Diego are still in the theater.
When we have innocent conversations like this, I realize that Ashwini is still a little girl even though, she sounds like a grownup when she talks. OR… she really is a grownup kid and she was trying to trick Adit.

Heard on A Prairie Home Companion podcast:
Oli was visiting Sven who had recently bought a new cow.
Sven: This cow is funny. She farts whenever I milk her.
Oli: Let me see…
They walked over to the cow, Oli sat down on the stool, pulled at her udder and the cow let out a fart.
Oli: Hmmm. Is this cow from North Dakota?
Sven: Yes. How did you guess?
Oli: My wife is from there and she does the same thing.
I had taken a sip of my coffee just before Garrison delivered the punch-line. It was so unexpected, most of that coffee ended up on my monitor. Had to do a major cleanup. Thanks, Mr. Keillor!
