July 28th, 2008

I had created images with cloned children like this one here, a couple of times before. This was before Adit was born and only Ashwini appears in them. Click below to see these old photos.

Star trails

July 20th, 2008

First attempt at capturing star trails by stitching multiple images instead of one long exposure. Seems to work better. This is composite of about 20 minutes of images in the Northern sky. Pole star is quite obvious. Some day, I’ll have a few hours of star trails in one image. Click below to see a bigger photo.

Billy Joel concert

July 11th, 2008

Went to Billy Joel concert last Thursday (7/3/08) at Mohegan Sun. It was one of the concerts ever. Billy Joel was so lively and gave a great performance. Looked like he was enjoying himself a lot on the stage. 20+ songs in just over 2 hours: It was a treat. He sang most of his popular songs but also some obscure ones and his band was awesome. Here is a setlist that I found on the internet.

Prelude/Angry Young Man || My Life || The Entertainer || Zanzibar || New York State of Mind || Downeaster “Alexa” || Root Beer Rag || Allentown || Don’t Ask Me Why || Room Of Our Own || Movin’ Out || She’s Always A Woman || Captain Jack || River of Dreams || Matter Of Trust || Highway to Hell* || We Didn’t Start The Fire || Its Still Rock ‘n’ Roll To Me || You May Be Right || Scenes From An Italian Restaurant || Piano Man

Highway to Hell was performed by Joel’s guitar tech named “Chain Saw” and it was funny that Billy Joel introduced it as a religious song.

Our next concert will be Bob Dylan on Aug, 15th.

Eating parathas

July 9th, 2008

Whenever I eat stuffed parathas (aloo or paneer for example), the edges get eaten first. After eating the doughy part, I savor the insides that hold most of the stuffing with a thin layer of dough holding it together. I do the same with gulpoli but, puranpoli gets a different treatment. My preferred way of eating that is like a savage: Crush it completely, mix with warm milk to make it into a mud-like goop and then enjoy it.

How do you eat your parathas and puranpoli?

Green electricity

July 6th, 2008

Sometime earlier this year, I changed my electricity supplier to Community Energy, which produces electricity using renewable (reusable) resources such as wind and water. Their energy mix for our area was 50% wind and 50% low-impact hydroelectric. Recently, they changed it to 66% wind and 34% hydroelectric. That is even better, I guess. The cost of this electricity is slightly higher than the traditional coal/oil-fired generators. I started paying about 4% more after switching to this supplier.

Around the same time, I started changing all the light bulbs to CFLs. Now, there are about 30 CFLs around the house and increase in my electricity bill is more than offset. After taking an inventory of light bulbs, I realized that another 2 dozen bulbs need replacing. I had no idea that there were so many light bulbs in the house. Placed an order for 30 more CFLs. This should take care of our lighting needs for a long time. The estimated lifespan for CFL is about 5 years.

Micro-finance

July 2nd, 2008

Last year, I was searching for companies that let people participate in micro-financing. I came across two websites: Prosper.com and Kiva.org.

I have posted about my experience with Prosper.com sometime last year. It is a peer-to-peer money lending operation where you bid on funding loans and you get paid interest as the borrowers pay the loans back. My investment in Prosper loans has paid a handsome return of more than 10%.

Same time last July, I also opened an account with Kiva.org. It is a truly micro-financing site that lets you lend money, interest-free, to people in developing countries. Two loans that I had funded at that time, are more than 60% paid off and yesterday, I funded another loan. It feels good to help someone who is trying to stand on his/her own feet.
