Science experiments

August 21st, 2008

We have a couple of Science experiments ongoing at home. This could also be categorized as growing pets at home.

  • Growing butterflies: Kids are just totally intrigued by the metamorphosis process. Ashwini can even say that word perfectly.
    • Painted Lady butterflies: This was our third batch of 5 caterpillars from Insectlore.com. Four of them successfully turned into cocoons and the butterflies emerged about one week ago. We wanted to release them yesterday but, only two flew away. The other two were busy with lovemaking and had no interest in flying away. They will be released over the weekend. If they lay eggs before that, it will be interesting to start the whole cycle again.
    • Monarch butterflies: One of my colleagues brought me 2 caterpillars that his mother caught in the woods. Both of them turned into chysalis. One butterfly already emerged and we released him (we know the gender from spot pattern). We noticed this morning that the second chrysalis had turned brown. It means that the butterfly will be out by the end of today or tomorrow by latest. This generation will lay eggs soon and the butterflies from those eggs will do the amazing migration all the way to Mexico.
  • Venus fly trap: V brought us a kit to grow the carnivorous plant, Venus fly trap. After reading instructions, it looks like it is going to take a long time for them to grow. After the seeds go in the soil, we have to keep the pot in the refrigerator for 8 weeks. After taking it out, it takes 4 to 6 more weeks for them to germinate. I hope this is not a scam. :)

When I grow up…

August 20th, 2008

I have probably posted about this before. Adit keeps saying, “When I grow up, I’ll be a pig.” I found it to be funny and disturbing at the same time and kept wondering how he came up with it. Last night, the mystery was solved. We have a talking stuffed-toy of Simba from “Lion King“. One of the things that it says is: “When I grow up, I’ll be a king”. The word “king” sounds somewhat like “pig”. To Adit’s naive ears who doesn’t know anything about “Lion King” but knows pigs, it definitely sounds like “pig”.

Maybe, I should record Adit say that. If he grows up into a fat slob, we can file a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Disney for brainwashing him into fatness and use the recording as evidence.

A day with Ashwini

August 17th, 2008

On Friday, Ashwini came with me to my work. She was very excited to get her own badge and was thrilled to ride elevators and escalators. She sat with me drawing and reading while I did some work. A big dry erase board was her most favorite thing in my office. She bravely stayed alone in my office while I went to my lab to finish some work.

We left work around lunch time and went out to a diner where Ashwini enjoyed pancakes filled with chocolate chips. After lunch, it was time for a movie: “Wall.E” We heard a lot of praise for this movie and it was all appropriate. The animation was very beautifully done but, the story was a little complicated and Ashwini didn’t follow it all. Thankfully, there was nothing scary or mean and we could watch the whole movie. Previously, we had to walk out of “Shrek 3″ and “Cars”.

It was the first time I took Ashwini to work and wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Adit on the other hand will have to wait a few more years to do this.

The Dark Knight

August 10th, 2008

Watched “The Dark Knight” on Friday. It was well made but, was damn too long. There is only so much of loud explosions and bright flashes that my aging senses can take. In the end, with kidnapped wife and kids, I wasn’t sure if I was watching a Bollywood movie from the 80’s. Another annoying thing was how Batman spoke. I could hardly make out any words in that harsh gruff voice. Maybe it was the sound system in the ancient theater that we were in. All that elaborate costume was good enough to hide Bruce Wayne’s identity. Why did he need that horrible voice? OK, and the final complaint about the movie… miscasting of Batman’s love interest, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. I just didn’t like her. Not just me but, V didn’t like her either. She looked weird. They should have found a more glamorous woman. And, did I mention that it was too long? They should have cut about 45 minutes from it.

Now, all the good stuff about the movie.

Olympics 2008

August 8th, 2008

I already don’t like NBC’s coverage of the Olympics even before it began. The opening ceremony is ongoing but, NBC can’t break from ‘The Today Show’ and other inane programming. They will show a recording of the opening ceremony at 8pm tonight. Why not give people a choice of watching it live and then a rerun in prime time? I am pretty sure that rest of the Olympics coverage will be tightly controlled and severely edited to show only American athletes competing. On top of that, they’ll stuff all those fucking human interest stories down our throats. Last time we were in Michigan and we took the advantage of having a choice to watch the Canadian TV. This time, we are stuck with NBC. Damn!!!

One and a score years ago

August 5th, 2008

I am not sure if it was the 2nd or the 5th but, it was August of 1987. My first day at College. This was the day when I met V for the first time. She spoke fluent English with her friends. I could understand what they were talking about but, had no experience and confidence in English speaking like that. I was even afraid to talk with her. It took a few weeks before I figured out that she spoke Marathi, too. She had good handwriting and seemed to be very serious about taking notes in classes: a perfect candidate for me to copy class notes from, as I was busy doing everything except paying attention to our professors. Later on, I found some other more studious students to copy notes from and realized that V, although a little more serious about studies than me, was in the same category of lollygaggers. We were classmates, then friends, then good friends and then very good friends before getting married more than 8 years later.

During this last week, I got in touch with a couple of friends from college after about 16-17 years. One of them is very close by in New Jersey while the other one is in the farthest part of the world: Melbourne, Australia. It was so nice to talk with them after such a big gap and hear about what they have been doing all these years.
