A prairie home companion

April 26th, 2009

Went to see live broadcast of “A Prairie Home companion” last night. Garrison Keillor and the gang was in Waterbury, CT and Arlo Guthrie was the guest performer on the show. Here is a link to the show. After listening to the radio show for years, it was amazing to watch them perform all the segments that I like so much.

Tim Russell, Sue Scott and Fred Newman are just great in providing supporting voices and sound effects in all the skits. I wasn’t familiar with Arlo Guthrie’s music but, the folk songs he performed with his band were good. He is Woodie Guthrie’s son and is following his Dad’s legendary footsteps as a great folk musician.

News from Lake Wobegon” is my favorite segment. Everything else in the show is scripted but, for this part, GK just makes up a story right there live on Radio in front of the audience. I had heard about it before and it was great to watch it unfold.

Hoping to get a few more opportunities to see this show live again.

Springsteen in Hartford

April 24th, 2009

The concert was just amazing. Springsteen and E-street band were very entertaining. They know how to handle and manipulate the crowd. It was hard to believe that Bruce is 59 years old. His non-stop high energy performance for almost 3 hours was just great. These days none of the bands take a break during the shows.

- They played 3 songs from “Born to Run“.

- A good mix of old new and old songs. A good mix of slow and hard-hitting rock ballads.

- Nils Lofgren was great on the guitar. His riffs during “Ghost of Tom Joad” were fascinating.

- During one of Bruce’s close encounter with the front row crowds, some women grabbed him and tore the sleeve of his shirt. He had to get some medical attention to treat some nail scratches, I guess. He was very happy to fold up his other sleeve and show-off both of his buff arms.

- Drummer Max Weinberg’s 18-year old son, jay played the drums for a few songs. He was very good.

- Bruce took requests from the crowd and did 2 cover songs: “Wild Thing” by The Troggs and John Fogerty’s “Rocking all over the world”

- Here is the setlist from a review by Eric Danton of Hartford Courant.

1. Badlands
2. Outlaw Pete
3. Jackson Cage
4. She’s the One
5. Working on a Dream
6. Radio Nowhere
7. Seeds
8. Johnny 99
9. The Ghost of Tom Joad
10. Raise Your Hand
11. Wild Thing
12. Rockin’ All Over the World
13. The E Street Shuffle
14. Waitin’ on a Sunny Day
15. The Promised Land
16. The Wrestler
17. Kingdom of Days
18. Lonesome Day
19. The Rising
20. Born to Run
21. Cadillac Ranch
Encore
22. Hard Times Come Again No More
23. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
24. Land of Hope and Dreams
25. American Land
26. Rosalita

————————————————————————–
Looking forward to seeing Bruce Springsteen and the E-street Band in Hartford tonight. From all the reviews on the internet, it seems like a very entertaining show, not that I had any doubts about it. Two nights ago in Boston, they played 27 songs for almost 3 hours. It will be a treat to hear quite a few songs from “Born to Run“, one of my most favorite albums.

This will be updated after the show.

NPR staff names

April 17th, 2009

A few years ago, I made a post about one of the NPR reporters, Mandalit del Barco, whose name I liked and loved to hear it when she signed off at the end of a news report. There are many other names of NPR reporters and contributors that I have heard over the years and like very much. The latest one in Chana Joffe-Walt. She is a reporter for “Planet Money“, which is a regular podcast but not a regular show on the radio. She is part of a team that report economy news in programs like “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered“. You have to listen to her say her name; it is great!

I also like these names: Lourdes Garcia-Navarro, Barbara Bradley Hagerty, Tom Gjelten, Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson, Ofeibea Quist-Arcton, Dina Temple-Raston and Kai Ryssdal. There are others that I can’t think of right now. Here is a list of all the on-air staff at NPR.

Do you want one of these exotic sounding NPR names? Here is a trick for getting one as explained on lianablog.

Stimulus tax cuts

April 14th, 2009

I noticed that in our last paychecks we received some extra money (about $33 per paycheck) because the amount of federal income tax witholding was less. In the stimulus bill passed in February 2009, there is a provision called “making work pay” tax credit. It amounts to a tax credit of 6.2% of taxable income, upto a maximum of $400 for single filers and $800 for joint married filers. Instead of one lump sum check it is put into every paycheck. There are income limits for phasing out; here are the details.

We are not eligible to receive it just like how we were not eligible for Bush’s stimulus check last year. The treasury department sent out the Bush checks depending on who is eligible according to their 2007 tax returns. But, this time, they are cutting tax witholding for everyone who gets a paychecks. The problem is not only that we are getting something that we shouldn’t, but we are getting double of something we shouldn’t get, because we have two paychecks coming in the household. Next year while filing taxes, I’ll have to pay it all ($1600) back. So, I am going to do what Obama administration doesn’t want me to do. In stead of spending this stimulus money that I shouldn’t have received, I am diverting it to a savings account, so, I can keep it ready for tax filing in April 2010.

People who are eligible for this credit will also have a problem of getting double credit if they have two or more incomes coming into the household. They are applying this credit to every paycheck without any consideration. So, watch out and adjust your witholdings or be prepared to pay extra $400 or $800 to IRS in April 2010.

Blood donation

April 8th, 2009

Donated blood at American Red Cross blood drive at work. Did my good deed of the day AND lost one pound of weight. I just love the instant satisfaction of good karma one gets from blood donation.

The blood-sucking nurse was maha khadoos and the lady at the snack table was super friendly. The whole thing was so bipolar, that it was annoying.

Vital signs looked good:
Pulse: 64
Blood pressure: 120/80
Hemoglobin: 14.2

Don’t touch the queen!

April 6th, 2009

On NPR’s Morning Edition, there was a report about Michelle Obama charming everyone in Europe. Here, I paraphrase the reporter:

… Michelle Obama’s only misstep on the tour was wrapping her arm around the queen during her visit to Buckingham Palace. An anonymous Palace spokesman said that “We don’t issue instructions on not touching the queen”.

I just couldn’t stop laughing after hearing that. It reminded me of something else I had posted earlier. I guess the Buckingham Palace protocol must be similar to Kindergarten rules from Ashwini’s class. No touching, no pushing, no spitting etc.

Link to the AP report about “the incident”.

That’s right!

April 6th, 2009

On Sunday afternoon, I was in the yard with kids, enjoying warm spring weather. V opened the garage and started to back out her car.

Adit: Is mommy going to a store for shopping?
Ashwini: You got that right, mister!
