Acadia National Park

July 21st, 2009

acadia09-01

It had been a long time since we visited a National Park; the last time was before the kids were born. Last weekend, we went to Acadia National Park. On Saturday, it was cloudy, rainy and foggy but, the weather completely turned around on Sunday and Monday. This beautiful park is enjoyable in all kinds of weather. There are many many activities to do here and in 2 and half days we just scratched the surface.

  • Drive around the park on Park Loop road is the easiest thing to do. Vistas along the road are quite stunning and it is good that most of this road is one-way otherwise there’d be a lot more accidents. A drive up to the top of Mount Cadillac on a clear sunny day is a must.
  • There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails in the park. We went on one hike to the top of South Bubble (alt: 776 feet). It was a fun little hike and it was good to see how Ashwini enjoyed it. I see a good hiking partner in my near future.
  • Lunch at Jordan Pond House is an essential experience. Pop-overs and jelly are excellent. This restaurant has been in business for more than 100 years and is the only place where you can buy food in the park.
  • There are many places along the park loop road to go down along the rocky cliffs to the ocean. We walked around “Thunderhole” area.
  • We went on a Sunset cruise aboard a 150 ft four mast sailboat called Margaret Todd. It was windy and cold but a great experience.

We ate lobsters every day while we were in Maine. The best lobster was at the least fancy place of all called Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound in a town called Trenton just before getting onto Mount Desert Island where the park is located. There are plenty of good restaurants in downtown Bar Harbor. One of the places that we went to Rupununi Bar and Grill had a good choice of vegetarian dishes, too.

We totally enjoyed our time at Acadia and will be back there soon for a longer vacation. Here are some photos…

Appollo 11 video footage

July 16th, 2009

Heard this unbelievable story about the original video footage from Appollo 11 Moon mission, on NPR this morning. NASA officials decided to reuse magnetic tapes and ended up erasing this historic video recording.

This reminds me of another lost video footage in a very similar manner. Back in late 70’s or early 80’s, Pu. La. Deshpande performed “वारयावरची वरात” and “एक रविवार सकाळ” on Doordarshan. It was probably some of the best TV programming ever. Doordarshan decided (hopefully unknowingly) to erase the original recordings to reuse the tapes. I found this recording (probably from somebody’s VCR recording) on Youtube. I hope this recording is available as VCD or DVD in the market. If anyone knows any information about it, please let me know or just buy it for me and I’ll pay you back.

New London Fireworks

July 13th, 2009

fireworks09-07

As a part of Sailfest’09, an annual weekend-long festival in New London, CT, there was a huge fireworks display on Saturday night. It is setup by world famous Gucci Brothers and sponsored by the Mashantaket Pequot tribe that runs Foxwoods casino in this area. This year’s fireworks went for just over 20 minutes or so and were very very good… the best that I have ever seen. Here are some photos.

My name is Bonds. Corporate Bonds

July 12th, 2009

A few months ago, I wrote about adding corporate bonds to my portfolio for the first time. Due to the economic situation, even the investment-grade bonds were practically on sale. I bought some in February and some more in March.

Within last 4-5 months, their price has appreciated significantly. Without counting the interest payments that I received, these investments have gone up by 9.98% in value. That is about 25-30% annual yield. On average their interest yield is 5.65%. I don’t expect them to continue to climb but, even if they hold on to the current gains and keep making interest payments, I’d be very very happy.
