3 idiots

December 30th, 2009

No! I haven’t seen the movie yet. After reading from everyone’s facebook status and tweets about it, I was getting curious about the movie. Then, I read a review by Sukanya Verma on Rediff.

  • 50 year old Amir Khan is still playing a college student.
  • …Aamir delivering a baby on a ping-pong table with the help of a vacuum cleaner…
  • …3 Idiots is a full-on commercial entertainer with boisterous songs, romanticised idealism and jaunty buffoonery…

That was enough to quell my curiosity. I don’t need to waste precious hours of my life on 3 idiots. Thanks, Suku!

Blizzard of 09

December 21st, 2009

snow09-01

The snow was supposed to start on mid-day Saturday. We were worried that it was going to affect Adit’s birthday party but, it held off till late evening/night on Saturday. We woke up Sunday morning to find a foot of snow on the ground. There was a fierce wind all night that whipped up the snow into some drifts close to the house that were more than 2 feet deep. This was probably the most amount of snow I had to clear at one time.  I started with a full tank of gas on the snowblower and had to refill halfway through. Kids came out to play in the snow but, it was too deep to get the sled out and run around with it. Here are some photos.

Battling Cancer With T-Shirts And Laughter : NPR

This is such an inspiring story. This evening, it was one of those driveway moments. I had reached home but, had to stay in the car and listen till the story ended.

Stash that cash

December 10th, 2009

Interest rates on savings are at an abysmally low levels. Even ING Direct is offering only 1.3% on savings accounts. The highest interest you can get in a savings account right now is 1.7% from American Express. It is easy to open and operate this account just like ING.

The new rates on I-series savings bonds are up to 3.6%. They can be bought directly from the U.S. Treasury at treasurydirect.gov. The fixed rate on new bonds is 0.3% and the inflation index component is 3.3% for the next 6 months. The way things are going, I don’t think the inflation is going to go down again like last year. So, I-bonds are as good as or better than any 5 year term CD at a bank. The I-bonds can be cashed after 5 years without any penalty. Before than, 6 months interest is withheld as penalty. This is similar to owning a 5 year term CD.
