Heard this unbelievable story about the original video footage from Appollo 11 Moon mission, on NPR this morning. NASA officials decided to reuse magnetic tapes and ended up erasing this historic video recording.
This reminds me of another lost video footage in a very similar manner. Back in late 70’s or early 80’s, Pu. La. Deshpande performed “वारयावरची वरात” and “एक रविवार सकाळ” on Doordarshan. It was probably some of the best TV programming ever. Doordarshan decided (hopefully unknowingly) to erase the original recordings to reuse the tapes. I found this recording (probably from somebody’s VCR recording) on Youtube. I hope this recording is available as VCD or DVD in the market. If anyone knows any information about it, please let me know or just buy it for me and I’ll pay you back.

As a part of Sailfest’09, an annual weekend-long festival in New London, CT, there was a huge fireworks display on Saturday night. It is setup by world famous Gucci Brothers and sponsored by the Mashantaket Pequot tribe that runs Foxwoods casino in this area. This year’s fireworks went for just over 20 minutes or so and were very very good… the best that I have ever seen. Here are some photos.

Went to see live broadcast of “A Prairie Home companion” last night. Garrison Keillor and the gang was in Waterbury, CT and Arlo Guthrie was the guest performer on the show. Here is a link to the show. After listening to the radio show for years, it was amazing to watch them perform all the segments that I like so much.
Tim Russell, Sue Scott and Fred Newman are just great in providing supporting voices and sound effects in all the skits. I wasn’t familiar with Arlo Guthrie’s music but, the folk songs he performed with his band were good. He is Woodie Guthrie’s son and is following his Dad’s legendary footsteps as a great folk musician.
“News from Lake Wobegon” is my favorite segment. Everything else in the show is scripted but, for this part, GK just makes up a story right there live on Radio in front of the audience. I had heard about it before and it was great to watch it unfold.
Hoping to get a few more opportunities to see this show live again.

This week marks 50th anniversary of 2 products; both of which are somehow related to women. One claimed to have helped improve self-image of millions of girls and the other one got a group of 7 women started in business which I am sure must have improved their self-image and selfrespect. Fifty years ago, Mattel started selling Barbie dolls and a group of women in Mumbai started a home-based business selling “Lijjat Papad“. Both of these brands have become hugely successful over the years and have secured a top place in markets all around the globe.
I remember reading/hearing somewhere that if the Barbie doll is scaled up to human size, her dimensions will be 42D-24-34 which are far far away from any real woman. Don’t know how this helps girls build a better self-image. Googling “barbie real life measurements” gives several different answers.
In our house, Lijjat papad is definitely more popular than Barbie.V and I definitely like to eat papads more than playing with dolls and so do the kids. Ashwini is not much into playing with dolls of any kind. She received a couple of obligatory Barbies from friends and relatives as presents because of her gender but, she doesn’t really care about them.
Adit on the other hand, likes to play with Ashwini’s Barbie. His favorite game is taking her clothes off. Wonder when that is going to stop.

During the last couple of years of graduate school (1995-96), I discovered National Public Radio and have been listening to it ever since. Among the multitude of NPR shows that I like, A prairie home companion is one of the best. I really like how Garrison Keillor and his cast do a wonderful job of providing simple and clean entertainment each Saturday evening. I always wanted to watch them perform the show live but, never had a chance. They came to Kalamazoo, MI and Ann Arbor, MI right after I moved away from those towns.
Finally, I’ll get to watch the show live on April 25th, 2009 at the Palace theater in Waterbury, CT. It’ll be time to cross off one thing from my “100 things to do before I die” list.

On Friday, we went to a David Sedaris program. I was expecting it to be a book reading with him reading some chapters from his recent book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames
. I was hoping he’ll read some of my favorite stories from the book. But, it was a pleasant surprise when he read new stories that he was working on currently.
- “When a guy walks into a smoking bar car”
- A story about being on book-tour that he is writing for The Newyorker.
- A story about current politics.
- Reading from his diary
- A story from a book he recommended highly: The Braindead Megaphone
by George Saunders.
We were early for the show as there was not enough time to get dinner. After getting some drinks to get our beaks wet, we strolled towards our seats and found Sedaris signing books with no waiting line. We had a chat with him and got our books autographed. David is known to chat with everyone who goes for book-signing and his story #2 was about this aspect of his life. Overall, it was a fun evening that ended with us eating dinner at a Portuguese restaurant.

Eve Ensler’s very famous book, “The Vagina Monologues
” and its dramatized version have been around for quite a few years. The marquee advertising the play in Atlantic Beach, Fla. caused a minor stir, recently. A 25 year old woman was driving by the comedy club/theater with her 9 year old niece who read out the marquee and asked what vagina is. The woman got very upset that she was asked the question and promptly complained to Better Business Bureau. The comedy club changed the marquee to “The Hoohaa Monologues” as a joke. Hoohaa being a more colloquial word so everyone would understand what it is.
If a 9 year old girl doesn’t know what a vagina is, there are some real problems with this family. Also, this book is about how women don’t have very high regard for their genitals and how they avoid discussing this topic. This floridian lady just endorsed the main point of the book.

I remember seeing a documentary on HBO called ‘naked states’ on works of Spencer Tunick, a couple of years ago. He convinces hundreds and thousands of people to pose nude in public, arranges them in artistic and sometimes, bizzare formations (he calls them installations) and photographs them.
He started taking these photos in 1992 in New York. He was arrested in 1994 for photographing a nude woman at Rockefeller Center in NYC. His largest installations consisted of 7000 spaniards in Barcelona and 1700 english men and women in London. Many of these pictures are quite fascinating and very surreal. Check them out at these links.
