I always want to buy the best produce for my family, i.e., most nutritious and least polluted with pesticides etc. But, it is hard to achieve that many times. We live in an area that doesn’t have conveniently accessible “Whole Foods” or “Trader Joe’s”. Our local supermarkets have a limited selection of organic produce. Also, the organic versions are much more expensive and look stale as there isn’t very high demand. This makes it hard to decide what to buy organic and what not.
Here is a nice handy guide from foodnews.org about pesticide levels in produce. Please go to their website to download the complete guide.

I think I posted this before but, it is alright to repeat this PSA. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2007:
Small amounts of dark chocolate (one piece of a 16 piece bar of 100g or around 30 calories a day) when eaten daily for about 18 weeks can lower blood pressure, which in turn can help reduce the risk of stroke or death from coronary artery disease.
Use the Valentine’s day as an excuse to buy some good dark chocolate for yourself and your loved ones.

Due to our babysitter’s limited availability, instead of going out for a movie and a dinner, we had to choose between movie and dinner. It only took a few seconds for mexican food at Soltoro to kick Avatar out of contention.
Soltoro is Michael Jordon’s third restaurant at the Mohegan Sun casino. In the mexican food desert that is aka Connecticut, this restaurant is an oasis. Good food, good drinks and good atmosphere. They had a great collection of Tequilas. I did one ‘flight’ of tequilas and 2 out of 3 were quite good. We shared a flan for dessert and it came covered under a big dome of caramelized sugar. Very innovative design — I had never seen this before.
Should plan another outing there soon.

One of the best wines we have had in a long time: 2005 Fortium Salice Salentino. It is very fruity and smooth. Just wonderful! The problem is that I don’t know where I got it from and I can’t find it at my usual online wine shops. Now, I’ll have to make a round of our local wine shops to find it.

This week marks 50th anniversary of 2 products; both of which are somehow related to women. One claimed to have helped improve self-image of millions of girls and the other one got a group of 7 women started in business which I am sure must have improved their self-image and selfrespect. Fifty years ago, Mattel started selling Barbie dolls and a group of women in Mumbai started a home-based business selling “Lijjat Papad“. Both of these brands have become hugely successful over the years and have secured a top place in markets all around the globe.
I remember reading/hearing somewhere that if the Barbie doll is scaled up to human size, her dimensions will be 42D-24-34 which are far far away from any real woman. Don’t know how this helps girls build a better self-image. Googling “barbie real life measurements” gives several different answers.
In our house, Lijjat papad is definitely more popular than Barbie.V and I definitely like to eat papads more than playing with dolls and so do the kids. Ashwini is not much into playing with dolls of any kind. She received a couple of obligatory Barbies from friends and relatives as presents because of her gender but, she doesn’t really care about them.
Adit on the other hand, likes to play with Ashwini’s Barbie. His favorite game is taking her clothes off. Wonder when that is going to stop.

There are many foods that will make you fat, bloated and sick. On the other hand, there are foods that are helpful for healthy living and will actually
- lower your cholesterol,
- reduce your heart disease and cancer risk,
- put you in a better mood.
The best part is that you don’t have to go out of your way to get them. Try eating more of following things and you’ll be doing yourself a big favor: beans, blueberries, broccoli, oats, oranges, pumpkin, salmon, soy, spinach, tea (green or black), tomatoes, turkey, walnuts, and yogurt. They have lots of antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids and fiber that your body badly needs.
Also, don’t forget moderate amounts of red wine and that dark chocolate I mentioned in an earlier post.

but but but… that is too little. Who can stop after eating just 6 gms of chocolate? I hope eating a few more pieces don’t reverse the good effects of that first one little piece.

Here is an unequivocal endorsement for two outstanding products that I have been using and loving for the last couple of months:
- Fage yogurt: Pronounced as fayeh. This greek-style strained yogurt is much thicker than usual yogurt. Strained yogurt is similar to चक्का (chakka) but not quite that dry. I especially like “Fage with honey”. It reminds me of पंचामृत (panchaamroot: mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar and honey) eventhough it is missing a few components.
- Neutrogena foot cream: This “Norwegian formula” cream is just miraculous. It healed my badly cracked heels and kept them in good shape with just one application per day. No more torn socks from razor-sharp cracked dry skin. Lets see how it works out in the winter time. If my feet get worse, Neutrogena has the next level of cream for treating cracked heels. Hopefully, that will do the job.

Link for Leeners: A website that sells kits for making your own wine, hard cider, meade, cheese etc. No time to get into it right now. Some day, I’ll have enough time to do this. It will be interesting.

Whenever I eat stuffed parathas (aloo or paneer for example), the edges get eaten first. After eating the doughy part, I savor the insides that hold most of the stuffing with a thin layer of dough holding it together. I do the same with gulpoli but, puranpoli gets a different treatment. My preferred way of eating that is like a savage: Crush it completely, mix with warm milk to make it into a mud-like goop and then enjoy it.
How do you eat your parathas and puranpoli?
