Wedding plans

April 12th, 2011

Breakfast conversation this morning…

Ashwini: I am going to marry someone who has a sister.
me: Why?
Ashwini: That way I can marry the boy and Adit could marry his sister.
Adit: But… I don’t want to get married.
Ashwini: Come on, Adit. It will be fun. We will be one big family.
Adit: OK. I’ll marry her if she plays with me.
Ashwini: I am going to have an Indian wedding.
Me: Why is that?
Ashwini: Because, I don’t like all that kissing in the American wedding.
Me: What if the groom wants an American wedding?
Ashwini: Hmmm…. Then, we’ll have to do both. I like the white dress but, I like Indian wedding more.
Me: That’s a good idea. You can do Indian wedding in the morning and other one in the evening.
Ashwini: No, no, no. I’ll do the American wedding in the morning. I want to get done with kissing and then have fun at the Indian wedding.

I want to hold your hand

November 29th, 2010

After watching the new Apple-Beatles ad on TV during football, I was humming the song “I want to hold you haaaaannnd, I want to hold your hand…” That prompted a response from the kids.

Ashwini: because, I love you.

Adit: because, I am scared.

Now, I know why they hold my hand when they do. :)

Kids

November 17th, 2010

It is just amazing that for a tiny fraction of waking time, the kids are well behaved and are actually nice to each other. As a parent, one wants to remember and cherish these rare moments.

This morning, I dropped them off outside the school as we missed the school bus. Ashwini offered to help Adit get to his classroom so that I didn’t have to park the car and go inside with them. It was just picture perfect to watch them walk together on the sidewalk holding each other’s hand.

I couldn’t take a picture as I didn’t want to hold up other cars behind me. But, this following picture is almost exactly what I saw. I know the number of kids is not right but, it was a similar image. All you Hindi movie buffs, let’s see if you can recognize this. If not, shame on you.

Apple picking 2010

October 18th, 2010

applepicking01-sm

It was a gorgeous Fall day… perfect for doing anything outdoors. Kids just love this yearly activity of visiting pumpkin patches and apple orchards for picking apples. Thankfully, our neighborhood orchard has both pumpkins and apples. There was a lot of chatter while we walked between the rows of apple trees looking for apples that were low enough for the kids to pick by themselves.

Adit: Did you know how I got this apple?
Me: How?
Adit: My friend gravity helped me pull it down from the tree.
Ashwini: Gravity is good. She always pulls everything down. Apples, your arms and legs. Keeps you from floating away in space.
Adit: Gravity is not a girl. He is a boy.
Ashwini: No. She is a girl.
Adit: Uh.. uh. A boy!
Ashwini: Maybe gravity is both a boy and a girl… a goy or a birl.
Adit: or a borl.

It stopped right there as we approached a tree with lots of low-hanging apples. Click below for more photos.

The thinking chair

October 7th, 2010

Compare and contrast:

Adit: Today, I was sent to the thinking chair.
V: Why? What happened?
Adit: Robert and I and Emory were squishing together. So, Mrs. Whipple sent us to the thinking chair. But, I got the best thinking chair to sit on.

Ashwini explained that in Kindergarten the timeout chair is called the thinking chair.

V: Ashwini, do you have a timeout chair in your classroom?
Ashwini: Yes, there is one. But, I have never sat in it.
V: What about last year? Was there one in your first grade classroom.
Ashwini: Yes. But, I was never sent to that one, too.

I can just imagine getting several phone calls/emails from the Principal’s office in the future. Can you guess who will be responsible for those?

First day of school

August 30th, 2010

Adit-firstday01

Ashwini was waiting eagerly for today and so was Adit. They were quite excited that school started today. It was Ashwini’s first day in second grade and Adit’s truly first day at school in the Kindergarten class. A big milestone for Adit as this marks the end of just fun all day and more importantly no more afternoon naps. All the goofing off is finished. Now, it will be school followed by more school followed by work, career, family for about 50-60 years before there is time to just sit and goof off again. I hope he is ready for all this.

Thank you, Shrek!

August 26th, 2010

One of the favorite places for us to take kids isĀ Harkness state park in Waterford, CT. We really like the open space to run around and fly kites along with the beach to have the option of water play. The mansion in this park is a popular place for people to get married and we have seen several wedding parties during our visits there. Also, Ashwini saw photos of someone getting married at Mystic aquarium when she went for Summer camp at the aquarium.

V was driving the kids to/from school when the following conversation went on.

Ashwini: Mommy, if we live in Connecticut, can I get married in Harkness park or Mystic aquarium?

V: Sure. You can get married anywhere you want.
Ashwini: Can I get married in New York or Michigan or how about India?
V: Yes. Anywhere you want. When you are older and want to get married, we’ll decide.
Adit: Ashwini, we should get married in India.
Ashwini: No way! You are not marrying me.
Adit: Why not?
Ashwini: Because, I am not your true love. You only marry your true love.
