Blood donation

April 8th, 2009

Donated blood at American Red Cross blood drive at work. Did my good deed of the day AND lost one pound of weight. I just love the instant satisfaction of good karma one gets from blood donation.

The blood-sucking nurse was maha khadoos and the lady at the snack table was super friendly. The whole thing was so bipolar, that it was annoying.

Vital signs looked good:
Pulse: 64
Blood pressure: 120/80
Hemoglobin: 14.2

Vision checkup

March 12th, 2009

Got my eyes checked with the eye doctor. It was just a periodic check-up and I passed with flying colors. There are no horrible physical conditions: no glaucoma, no retinal detachment, no swelling of blood vessels and no macular degeneration. In terms of vision, it is 20/20. This doctor’s office had a machine that measured refractive index of the lens inside the eye. So, it doesn’t depend on your ability to read the chart from distance  to figure out if a corrective lens is needed. I have very slight near-sightedness and it will compensate for loss of age-related focusing ability. That means it’ll delay the need for reading glasses by a few years.

I was very happy with this checkup knowing my eyes are in good health. On the other hand, I was a little sad that I won’t be wearing any eye-glasses anytime soon. That dashes my hopes of adding some ‘dignified look’ to my personality.

25 random things about me

February 10th, 2009

Don’t remember if I got tagged on Facebook or somewhere else, but here we go…

  1. My left index finger was injured 2 years ago while opening a window and it is hurting again as it got colder.
  2. Here is my preference for seasons: Fall, Spring, Winter and Summer. Unfortunately, there is no monsoon where I live, otherwise, that would top the list.
  3. In the past, I used to spend hours on the phone each day gabbing about who knows what and now-a-days, it is hard to go longer than 3 minutes.
  4. I drink at least 3 cups of coffee each day.
  5. I like solving large (500+ pieces) jigsaw puzzles but, haven’t done any in the last 6-7 years.
  6. I want to watch “DevD”. I never thought that I’d ever say that I “want” to watch a certain hindi movie.
  7. I can walk forever but, can’t run even to save my life.
  8. My weight hasn’t changed significantly (more than +/- 3 pounds) in the last 10 years.
  9. I am very susceptible to catching colds/coughs but, I never get any other sickness. Also, I never get headaches.
  10. My handwriting has gotten worse progressively over the last decade as I write less and type more.
  11. I’d choose “matakichi usal” and “shikran” with poli over any gourmet meal.
  12. I can live on pizza, popcorn and ice cream.
  13. I am in my extremely late 30’s.
  14. I still have a 20/20 vision and don’t need any corrective lenses. Hope to continue this forever.

Lace and fur

January 25th, 2009

While traditional gifts for 13th wedding anniversary are lace, fur and textiles, what I received and gave is very very different. Right now, V is enjoying some pampering at a spa and I am busy playing with my new toy.

A prairie home companion

November 20th, 2008

During the last couple of years of graduate school (1995-96), I discovered National Public Radio and have been listening to it ever since. Among the multitude of NPR shows that I like, A prairie home companion is one of the best. I really like how Garrison Keillor and his cast do a wonderful job of providing simple and clean entertainment each Saturday evening. I always wanted to watch them perform the show live but, never had a chance. They came to Kalamazoo, MI and Ann Arbor, MI right after I moved away from those towns.

Finally, I’ll get to watch the show live on April 25th, 2009 at the Palace theater in Waterbury, CT. It’ll be time to cross off one thing from my “100 things to do before I die” list.

Utilities usage

November 17th, 2008

I was looking at the electric bill and our conservation efforts are working rather well. Comparing our consumption for the month of October, we used significantly less electricity in 2008 (17 Kwh/day) than 2007 (22 Kwh/day). That is 22.7% reduction. I was quite impressed given the fact that the average outside temperature for October 2007 was 58F compared to 48F this year.

Co-incidentally, the semi-annual water bill came in the mail as well. According to that, we used about 32000 gallons of water in 6 months. That is just over 5000 per month. We have these low-flow showerheads that limit flow at 2.5gpm. Considering about 10 minutes in the shower per person, we use about 100 gallons everyday for showers. That accounts for more than half of all our water usage. Toilets probably use another 30 gallons per day. We can’t cut down on showers, especially now in the winter season when it feels so good to stand under that hot shower. I should get those fancy flushing tanks that allows flushing two different volumes of water depending on your need. Or, choose the other cheaper option: Put a 2ltr soda bottle filled with water and some pebbles inside the tank to reduce available volume for flushing. Should experiment with these things. This will keep me busy for a few days, as if I have a lot of time I don’t know what to do with. :)
