Summer fun

June 9th, 2010

We get a periodic newsletter from our childcare provider. A recent newsletter was about fun outdoor activities for kids. We love to go out for walks in woods and observe & collect all kinds of stuff. There are some wonderful ideas in this article to add more activities to walks. I am looking forward to trying out some of these on our next walk. Click below to read the full article.

Birds

May 26th, 2010

A new strategic location for our bird feeder is turning out to be very good. We can look at the birds through our patio door without disturbing them and that is making it easier for kids to view the birds. Here are a couple of photos of visitors to our bird feeder.

Acadia National Park

July 21st, 2009

acadia09-01

It had been a long time since we visited a National Park; the last time was before the kids were born. Last weekend, we went to Acadia National Park. On Saturday, it was cloudy, rainy and foggy but, the weather completely turned around on Sunday and Monday. This beautiful park is enjoyable in all kinds of weather. There are many many activities to do here and in 2 and half days we just scratched the surface.

  • Drive around the park on Park Loop road is the easiest thing to do. Vistas along the road are quite stunning and it is good that most of this road is one-way otherwise there’d be a lot more accidents. A drive up to the top of Mount Cadillac on a clear sunny day is a must.
  • There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails in the park. We went on one hike to the top of South Bubble (alt: 776 feet). It was a fun little hike and it was good to see how Ashwini enjoyed it. I see a good hiking partner in my near future.
  • Lunch at Jordan Pond House is an essential experience. Pop-overs and jelly are excellent. This restaurant has been in business for more than 100 years and is the only place where you can buy food in the park.
  • There are many places along the park loop road to go down along the rocky cliffs to the ocean. We walked around “Thunderhole” area.
  • We went on a Sunset cruise aboard a 150 ft four mast sailboat called Margaret Todd. It was windy and cold but a great experience.

We ate lobsters every day while we were in Maine. The best lobster was at the least fancy place of all called Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound in a town called Trenton just before getting onto Mount Desert Island where the park is located. There are plenty of good restaurants in downtown Bar Harbor. One of the places that we went to Rupununi Bar and Grill had a good choice of vegetarian dishes, too.

We totally enjoyed our time at Acadia and will be back there soon for a longer vacation. Here are some photos…

Farewell, Aaji

May 28th, 2009

aaji-02

On Tuesday, my mother-in-law passed away peacefully. Her children and siblings were by her side to bid farewell. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be truly missed by all of us. She lived a full, happy life and was very proud of the achievements of her daughter and son. She had a passion for cricket and she was a master of Maharashtrian cuisine. It is very fitting that she was watching a Indian Premier League match on TV and eating modaks that she made herself, when she suffered sub-arachnoid hemorrhage that took her life.

I hope that we have absorbed some of her wisdom and cooking skills. May she rest in peace.

MacArthur Foundation

February 13th, 2009

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation supports National Public Radio. In recognition of their support, NPR reads this 10 second blurb that I really like:

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is committed to building a more just, verdant and peaceful world.

I just love that word, verdant and should use it more often.

ver⋅dant   [vur-dnt]  –adjective
1. green with vegetation; covered with growing plants or grass: a verdant oasis.
2. of the color green: a verdant lawn.

1575–85; verd(ure) + -ant

Mt. Monadnock hike

October 5th, 2008
From Mt. Monadnock

All Summer long, I was planning with my friend to go for a day-hike in New Hampshire. It finally happened after official end of Summer. But, the time was appropriate to hike up Mt. Monadnock (3165 ft.) as fall colors are starting to show up and the cool weather kept us from getting exhausted. Also, my brother was able to come along.

It is not a very difficult hike: altitude gain of about 2000 ft. over 2.5 miles. But, we missed the trail markings as we were busy chatting and got lost. We had to climb up some big rock patches and that just made the whole trip very interesting. As we reached the summit, it got colder and a fierce wind pushed wind chill well below freezing. We sat around behind a big rock shielding us from the wind to eat a snack before heading back down.

After successfully conquering an easy summit, we decided on planning more hikes next Spring/Summer. Lets see how it works out.

Men’s room

September 29th, 2008
  • Is it so hard for people to push that little lever and flush the urinal after using it? Many times, I walk upto one and find it full of stinky yellow liquid. It is just disgusting!
  • I notice some men take off their belt, unbuckle their pants and open the front completely while at the urinal instead of just unzipping the fly. To me, they are saying one of the two following things:
    • My instrument is so huge that it can’t come out of that little slit in the front of the pants.
    • I have leaky plumbing. If I try to use the fly, I am going to soil my clothes.

Question to men readers: What do you do? Use your fly or open pants? Please explain why, if you choose the second option.
