3 idiots – part 2

January 5th, 2010

Watched 3 idiots today. All is well. Nothing has changed. Bollywood is still making crappy movies and they are very popular and make boatload of money. The only saving grace of the evening was the wonderful air-conditioning of the movie theater. If it wasn’t so hot outside, I’d have left the movie. Another nice thing about the movie was good camera work and some beautiful locations in Himachal Pradesh. Other than that, it is just the same old tired jokes and same old cliches. Nothing of substance.

The movie should have ended when they stopped for the interval. The second half was completely superfluous and unnecessary. Three hours of running time was way too much. I liked Boman Irani (maybe because his character shared my last name) and the guy who played Chatur. I would have liked Boman more if he had played the part of a Marathi person properly. He played a Parsi with a Marathi last name. That was very sad. His daughters didn’t sound Marathi either. The movie would have been the same it their last name was “Sharma”. There was no need to drag my good last name through all this mud.

The three idiots were absolutely motherfu*king idiots. There isn’t much to say about them. Nobody would miss the story/script writer of the movie he fell off the face of the earth tomorrow. The only funny part in this movie was Chatur’s speech on “Teacher’s day”.

I don’t like Aamir Khan because he always plays these “I am so good and I know everything, so kiss the soles of my feet” roles. This was no different. Also, his hair plugs were quite prominent. I should make a note to myself not to watch movies with these old actors on big screen. All their flaws just stick in my eyes and then I can’t enjoy anything else. A 44 year old can’t play a 20 year old college student. Doesn’t matter if he drinks 5 liters of water every day or not.

There was no need for Kareena Kapoor to be in the movie other than the song in the rain. I’d have preferred if Kareena and Aamir had exchanged their costumes for the song. ;)

All this glorification of bad behavior on college campuses and boozing by college students is just not right. There are enough problems on college campuses as it is, there is no need for Bollywood to promote more of this nonsense.

I feel sorry for wasting my cousin’s money to buy the movie tickets.

3 idiots

December 30th, 2009

No! I haven’t seen the movie yet. After reading from everyone’s facebook status and tweets about it, I was getting curious about the movie. Then, I read a review by Sukanya Verma on Rediff.

  • 50 year old Amir Khan is still playing a college student.
  • …Aamir delivering a baby on a ping-pong table with the help of a vacuum cleaner…
  • …3 Idiots is a full-on commercial entertainer with boisterous songs, romanticised idealism and jaunty buffoonery…

That was enough to quell my curiosity. I don’t need to waste precious hours of my life on 3 idiots. Thanks, Suku!

Two movies

February 23rd, 2009

Watched two (actually, one and half) Hindi movies in the last few weeks.

  • Chak de India: A good movie about Indian Women’s Hockey team training and their eventual win in the World Cup, all fueled by a disgraced player working as their coach. Interesting plot; very different from the regular Bollywood trash. It is very watchable as Shah Rukh Khan didn’t get a chance to do his usual overacting and trying to look cute. Another plus point was that it had no songs and dances. The only bad part about this otherwise well-made movie was the background score. It was very annoying.
  • Jaane tu ya jaane na: Watched half of this movie at a friend’s house over the weekend and promptly took it out of our Netflix queue. The first half was so pointless that I don’t really care about what happens later on. The lead actress, Genelia, should take some Hindi speaking lessons if she wants to continue acting in Bollywood. This was one of the top 5 Bollywood movies of 2008. Don’t know why people liked it so much. I refuse waste more time and energy than I already have by writing about the pointless plot and very forgettable actors and characters.

A big chunk of movies that we have watched lately, I don’t seem to enjoy. It is not like we watch every movie that comes out. We only try out critically acclaimed and/or very popular movies. Can’t seem to agree with the critics or public on many of these movie choices. Oh well… I think I am turning into a sour old fart.

Netflix Movies

January 27th, 2009

Ever since we started subscribing to Netflix in October of last year, our movie consumption has increased tremendously. Here is a list of movies we watched over the last 3 months which is 3 times longer than the list of movies we watched in the previous 12 months:

  1. The Love Guru: It is just horrible, even to Mike Myers fans like us. He had some good moments and stunning jokes in the movie but, overall the whole movie didn’t gel together.
  2. Casino Royale: A well-made action movie. It was very enjoyable. The first action sequence was just too much. I wanted them to stop the chase as I couldn’t handle the action anymore. Still, to me Craig is not a good Bond. My favorites are Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan. All others are just temporary replacements.
  3. Batman Begins: I can’t decide if this movie is louder, flashy, jarring and more annoying than “The Dark Knight“. Action and stunts were good in both the movies but, they really should have chosen another actor for Batman’s role. I find it absolutely amazing how someone (you know who you are) could watch both these Batman movies 3 or 4 times each.
  4. Sex and the City: The Movie: I’ll admit without shame that I used to regularly watch the original show on HBO when it aired back in 1990’s and early 2000’s. It was very good — on the edge– with subject matter that you couldn’t get to watch on any other show on any other channel. During the last couple of seasons when those ladies started to get married, the show started to get boring. The last season was a disaster. Sadly, this movie was a continuation of that disaster. More than once during th movie, I wanted to slap Sarah Jessica Parker till she fainted.
  5. Aaja Nachle: I really wanted to like this movie, as it was a big comeback for Madhuri Dixit. I would have ignored the bad plot and storyline that made no sense but, Madhuri Dixit looked very weird in the movie. She wasn’t the original Madhuri that I remembered from her pre-marital days. She looked like a strange cross between Jennifer Lopez and Madonna in a bad way. (I can think of some good ways of combining those two women!)
  6. An Inconvenient Truth: It is an absolutely must-see documentary for everyone on this planet. The whole topic of global warming is very convincingly presented.
  7. Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Very boring movie with no point. I fell asleep several times while watching it only to be woken up by loud sounds of gunfire.
  8. Chak de India: Haven’t finished watching yet. Couldn’t take more than one hour of it at a time. The background music was very annoying.

Our current usage of Netflix is more than 2 movies a month. Lets see for how long this continues. The last time we used Netflix a few years ago, last rented movie was returned, unwatched after keeping it in the house for 7 months.

Netflix also provides this view-on-demand service over the internet. It is very convenient. I have been catching up on missed episodes (actually whole seasons) of CSI.

Q and A

January 13th, 2009

Thanks to Santa (Deven), I received “Q and A” by Vikas Swarup, the novel on which the movie Slumdog Millionaire is based on. Just listening to it, I could imagine how great the story is for turning into a movie. Hopefully, it will come to DVD or HBO soon, so we could watch it.

Unlike most other audiobooks which are read by just one person, this one is a radio drama with many voices, background music etc. Everyone probably knows the story so, I won’t write about it except to say that it is very fast paced and engaging. From some reviews at Amazon.com for the book Q & A: A Novel, it seems that the story of the movie is inspired from this book and is not a direct adaptation. It would be interesting to see which parts of the book are in the movie.

The Dark Knight

August 10th, 2008

Watched “The Dark Knight” on Friday. It was well made but, was damn too long. There is only so much of loud explosions and bright flashes that my aging senses can take. In the end, with kidnapped wife and kids, I wasn’t sure if I was watching a Bollywood movie from the 80’s. Another annoying thing was how Batman spoke. I could hardly make out any words in that harsh gruff voice. Maybe it was the sound system in the ancient theater that we were in. All that elaborate costume was good enough to hide Bruce Wayne’s identity. Why did he need that horrible voice? OK, and the final complaint about the movie… miscasting of Batman’s love interest, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. I just didn’t like her. Not just me but, V didn’t like her either. She looked weird. They should have found a more glamorous woman. And, did I mention that it was too long? They should have cut about 45 minutes from it.

Now, all the good stuff about the movie.

NYC to BOM

January 14th, 2008

This was my time on Air India and It was one of the best airline experiences ever. Direct flight from New York to Mumbai takes only 13 hours and 40 minutes. This route is serviced by new Boeing 777 planes that are really nice. Lots of legroom, the seats are comfortable and are equiped with personal on-demand video service. I had unlimited and uninterrupted access to TV after a long long time and I made full use of it. Other than about 4-5 hours of sleep, I was watching it constantly.

Here are the movies that I watched:

  • Casino Royale: It is probably the most action-packed Bond movie ever. I was getting tired watching all the running around. The new Bond is the best built, but his face most definitely is not suitable for Bond. As I had mentioned before, he looks like a KGB agent.
  • Khosla ka ghosla: I like it. Anupam Kher did a good job without making a fool of himself. The movie is made very well, too.
  • Lage raho munnabhai: bande me tha dum, vande mataram!!! Quite entertaining. I am not ashamed to admit that I like Sanjeev Dutt.
  • Eklavya: It was OK except Amitabh Bachchan. It was painful to look at him. He looked so so old and his costume and make-up didn’t help him.
  • Uttaraayan: Watched a Marathi movie after a long time. It was a good adaptation of “Durgi” by Jayawant Dalwi, but it could have been made better. The dialog lacked substance and cohesiveness at times. Also, it should included more poetry as it was an important part of the relationship between Raghu and Durgi.
  • Bhagum bhag: couldn’t take more than about 10 minutes of it.

The best part about all these hindi movies was that they were edited to remove all the songs and made to fit in less than 2 hours. It was just perfect. All the three movies had Boman Irani. He seemed much better than Kader Khan and Johny Lever. Maybe, after a few more movies, he will become unbearable too. Also, two of them had Vidya Balan. She looked quite good. Probably one of the best of the newer actresses in Bollywood.

Looking forward to watching a few more movies on my way back on the 25th.

November 27th, 2007

I just recharged my RelianceIndiaCall.com calling card for India. It came with a coupon for a hindi movie download. I am totally clueless about choosing what to get. Here is a link that lists all the movies available to me. Can anyone please suggest one that is worth watching?

Dhak Dhak

August 13th, 2007

Someone once said to me, “What kind of Madhuri Dixit fan are you if you haven’t seen ‘Dhak Dhak’ from Beta?”

So, I looked it up on Youtube.

Maybe, it was better that I hadn’t seen it. Now, I hate that cockroach named Anil Kapoor more than ever before.

Happy Feet and Don

January 8th, 2007

Went to watch Happy Feet with Ashwini on Saturday. It is a beautifully made movie. The animation and music was great. The story was a little too advanced for Ashwini. There were quite a few chase sequences that were done brilliantly, scared Ashwini a bit. I usually don’t like Robin Williams, but he provided voices for a couple of characters very well. I guess I just don’t like watch his monkey-like antics on screen. Overall, an excellent movie.

Tried watching the new Don on Friday night. It was atrocious. Couldn’t finish it. I haven’t seen the original, but I am sure it was better than this new version. All the psychedelic colors and flashes seemed to hypnotize me and made me fall asleep several times during the first hour or so of what we watched. I just couldn’t get over Don wearing the silly tie (made with shirt fabric) inside an open collar shirt. Don’t waste your money on it, if you haven’t already.
